I was delighted this week to learn that 45 year old Ivorian artist, Joana Choumali has become the first African photographer to scoop the Prix Pictet prize, winning with a series of embroidered photographs responding to the trauma of terrorist attacks in Ivory Coast in 2016. The series is entitled ‘Ca va aller‘ – meaning – ‘it will be ok‘, a reference to stoical reaction to adversity that she said permeated Ivorian culture. Her images were printed onto canvas and then later embroidered with stitches directly onto the surface. Combining photographic imagery with fabric and therefore, creating ‘conceptual portraits‘. She created this work ‘as a need to process the pain‘. She said ‘each stitch was a way to recover, to lay down the emotions, the loneliness and mixed feelings I felt‘. Her work is stunning but what particularly interested me was the way it helped her to process her inner pain. I believe pain is the root to many artists’ work, whether that be pictorial, sculpture or the written word and I refuse to believe anyone who tells me, and they frequently do, that it has no place – it has every place. I am luckily enough to be invited to many exhibitions and shows around the world and earlier this year, I attended the opening of Tracey Emin’s brutal portraits of female pain exhibition ‘a fortnight of tears‘. I spoke with her and discussed her work. Her background repeats in much of her art and as she gets older, also the sleeplessness, exhaustion, whirling anxieties and the fear of running out of time contribute. The power of female art has become vital for women and not ‘just‘ artists but for all women. French writer and poet Andre Breton once described Frida Kahlo’s art as a ‘ribbon around a bomb‘, I say, standby for the blast…

Our eighty sixth interview in this series of intimate interviews is with talented photographer and artist Kaoru Shintaku from Singapore. You may know her from her popular Instagram account entitled @patragraphy. Shintaku is Japanese born and grew up in Tokyo but currently she lives in Singapore. This interview is inspiring for many reasons, her imagery which includes florals, cityscapes and landscapes are as precise as her language, as she utilises the use of colour and tone in tandem. Shintaku maintains her sang-froid throughout whilst simultaneously charming us as she hews closely to her thoughts and feelings. Enjoy!

Mobile Photography & Art – ‘Intimate Interview’ with Sean Hayes from Brussels, Belgium

Sean Hayes is something of a cultural artist crossing geographic boundaries, one who transforms cultural landscapes. His art is an experience, his portraiture and street work allows for a direct and intimate interaction with the viewer. The meticulous staging of light within his images fills the air with an awareness of living. Hayes’ landscape photography owes its eloquence to its matter-of-fact nature. Everything is observed, Hayes’ images carry the romantic undertow of both myth and mystery. Hayes achieves an engaging style with his art, he not only manages to cross physical borders between countries but I feel, he has a sense of the emotional boundaries between people, his portraiture demonstrates a level of empathy with the subject that brings us into another’s world, another’s pain, another’s joy.

Hayes is an award-winning photographer whose work has been selected for exhibitions in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Miami, Milan, Brussels and Paris. In 2012, Sean was awarded an Honorable Mention in the landscape category of the Mobile Photography Awards and 2nd place in the people category of the MPA 2013. For the 2015 MPA, he received honourable mentions in the Black and White, Portraits and Photo Journalism categories. He also won 3rd place for his Photo Essay of Irish landscapes. For the 2016 MPA, he received Honorable Mentions in the People, Landscape and Transport categories. Sean lives with his Belgian wife and children in Brussels and works as a professional photographer and advertising art director.
