‘Streets Ahead’ – Brand New Women’s Street Photography Column By JQ Gaines and Maddy McCoy
We are incredibly excited to announce that JQ Gaines and Maddy McCoy have joined The App Whisperer with a brand new Column entitled ‘Streets Ahead’. JQ Gaines already contributes to Parallel ll Perspectives with Catherine Restivo but this Column is very different and unique, as indeed they are all. The story behind the creation and concept of ‘Streets Ahead’ is an interesting one. One cold February night in 2013, Maddy McCoy and JQ Gaines found themselves walking up 8th Avenue (in NYC), engaged in an animated conversation that centered around a shared belief that women street photographers are under represented in the mobile photography community. Street photography has long been…

Mobile Photography – StreetsAhead – Special Edition – Women’s March 21 January 2017
Welcome to our Special Edition – Women’s March of 21 January 2017, StreetsAhead Showcase. Gina Costa and Cara Gallardo Weil our highly talented StreetsAhead Editors have chosen three distinct images to critique. These include images by Donna Donato, Heather Mc Allister and Kate Zari Roberts, as they represent the variety of the kinds of images that tell the story about the International Women’s March. At the heart of this important international event was the collective voice of Women (and Men) that women’s rights are not negotiable. All genders are equal. Women’s bodies are their own and and it should not be up to the politicians to make policy about what…

Mobile Photography – StreetsAhead – Tribute to Arjan van der Horst Challenge Results
This challenge showcase was devoted to our Arjan van der Horst who we tragically lost not so long ago. The challenge was to use the Arjan film (created by the Hipstamatic team in honour of Arjan) to capture images in the way we knew he would from the wonderful images he left us to remember him by. The four images I have selected I feel best capture the spirit and style of our dear friend. With many congratulations and huge thanks to Paula Betlem, FrauLN, Karen Axelrad, Christine Mignon, Gillian Brodie, Giulia Baita, Armineh Hovanesian, Montse Abad, Patricia Januszkiewicz, Ile Mont, Lee Atwell, Heather McAlister, Gina Costa, Marsha Leith, Lila Lile, Cara Gallardo…

Joanne Carter – TheAppWhisperer Speaks at The Photography Show 2015 – Seminar 1 – First Part
Many of you will be aware that I was invited to speak on stage at The Photography Show this year about mobile photography. This is the largest annual photography show in Europe and it was a privilege to be asked to talk. I was not given a brief, other than being told I had been booked for four 30 minute seminars over two days. I didn’t need or want a brief, I knew what I wanted to talk about, I knew what a wanted to share with the audience. I wanted to ensure that every single person that attended my talks, left inspired, invigorated with their minds buzzing at the…

Mobile Camera Club Presents ‘Outsiders’ – Exhibition Open To 28 March 2015
We are pleased to publish news of this wonderful gallery exhibition at the Mobile Camera Club in Paris. It poses the question, “Is street photography almost exclusively the domain of men? All evidence seems to point to this. Firstly, look at the big names: Cartier-Bresson, Doisneau, Evans, Frank, Winogrand, Meyerowitz, Klein and many others. Andthe plethora of exhibitions and articles celebrating street photography where not a single piece bearing a woman’s name is to be found? So many male photographers, and yet just a handful of women? Are Abbott, Arbus, Levitt, Model, Franck, or Maier just exceptions?” Of course we have our own very special Women’s Mobile Street Collection within…
