We do not take pictures, we are taken by pictures”  Ernst Haas

Forget ‘shooting from the hip’, the theme of our next challenge is ‘shooting from the knees’.

Sometimes, as street photographers, we may find ourselves feeling a little stagnant and we may desire to travel away from our usual environment (a new town or city) to find fresh inspiration. However, when that is not possible, changing our perspective can offer a refreshing change.

For this next challenge, we invite you to get low – squat, kneel, lye of the earth, put your mobile phone on the ground – but, have your camera lower than your knees (or thereabouts) and shoot from that level, or, turn your camera upwards and shoot ‘up.’

We hope you enjoy this theme and look forward to seeing your results!

A recap of our rules and procedure for entry:

For the challenge please only post FOUR photographs to our Flickr challenge site on the link below, and in your title or description include ‘Shooting from the Knees’

Welcome to our Tenth StreetWise Challenge  ‘Lines in the Street.’

This is a fun theme for a challenge and a prevailing one in photography!

While we are working, we must be conscious of what we’re doing.” Henri Cartier-Bresson

Many street photographers when they go out taking street photos are looking at how they can create strong compositions with the use of lines.  Others have predominant lines in their photos without intentionally searching them out, but, the inclusion of lines can help make the image a strong one.

Lines are a powerful tool for directing the viewer’s eye and attention to the main subject of a photograph. Compositional lines can be anything, supplying the photographer an infinite variety to choose from. From the vertical lines of a building, fence, or street light, to the horizontal line of the horizon, structure or sidewalk, diagonal lines that cross frames, to the curved lines of a road or walkway. Lastly, there are converging lines, which merge together and sometimes lead off to a vanishing point. There are simply many ways to use lines in street photography that put the focus on a photograph’s most important point of interest, strike balance in the composition, and set an overall tone that conveys what photographer is feeling.

We are very excited to view your submissions each month and look forward to curating your photographs for the next ‘Lines on the Street’ showcase.

The magic of the street is the mingling of the errand and the epiphany” Rebecca Solnit

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to our Eighth StreetWise Challenge  ‘People Working in the Street.’ We are thrilled to share it with you!

Thank you so much for participating and sharing your wonderful photographs. Lee and I were delighted by all the beautiful submissions to this fun challenge. It was particularly fascinating for us to see how people work in the streets in neighbourhoods from around the world and our showcase beautifully reflects a global coming together.

As always, Lee and I hope you enjoy the showcase as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

A reminder — we choose images for the showcase that are in keeping with our group intention and guidelines  “We believe that it is important to focus on the key aspects of street photography  composition, timing, juxtaposition, catching the decisive moment  rather than relying on too much apping. We therefore feel that apping should be kept to a minimum  cropping, tweaking exposure, colour, adding a grain or texture is okay, but we would like to see you steer away from overly app’ed images that are more art oriented or painterly.”
