The magic of the street is the mingling of the errand and the epiphany” Rebecca Solnit

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to our Eighth StreetWise Challenge  ‘People Working in the Street.’ We are thrilled to share it with you!

Thank you so much for participating and sharing your wonderful photographs. Lee and I were delighted by all the beautiful submissions to this fun challenge. It was particularly fascinating for us to see how people work in the streets in neighbourhoods from around the world and our showcase beautifully reflects a global coming together.

As always, Lee and I hope you enjoy the showcase as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

A reminder — we choose images for the showcase that are in keeping with our group intention and guidelines  “We believe that it is important to focus on the key aspects of street photography  composition, timing, juxtaposition, catching the decisive moment  rather than relying on too much apping. We therefore feel that apping should be kept to a minimum  cropping, tweaking exposure, colour, adding a grain or texture is okay, but we would like to see you steer away from overly app’ed images that are more art oriented or painterly.”

If you are a mobile street photographer, please consider joining our growing community.

To those new to our street photography community, welcome – it is great to have you join us!

“I go out every day. When I get depressed at the office, I go out, and as soon as I’m on the street and see people, I feel better. But I never go out with a preconceived idea. I let the street speak to me.” Bill Cunningham

Hello everyone!

Firstly, we’d like to wish you all a wonderful and inspired New Year. It has been an incredible last several months of seeing and sharing your photos here with you all on StreetWise. We hope that you feel supported and appreciated – we are grateful for the talent you share.

Thank you all for submitting your images to our StreetWise Flickr group during the month of December.  For us it is a joy and a privilege to view everyone’s images of the streets from around the world and through your images we could see the pulse of the holiday times in the photos you shared. Although the holidays are often beautiful times surrounded by friends and family for some, for others, it can be a painful time with feelings of loneliness, depression, anxiety and separation.

We hope you will enjoy our December showcase, illustrating the myriads of street scenes and emotions that can be seen and felt during this time.

It is always very difficult for us to choose such few images for the showcase from all those that were submitted and we want you to know we appreciate each and every post.

Hello Everyone!

The theme of our next challenge is ‘Shapes and Geometry in The Street’

Deadline: October 31, 2016

To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place” Elliot Erwitt

Shapes and Geometry are popular themes in any genre of photography, and street photography is no different. There are so many wonderful ways to incorporate both elements into your street shots. From the passing of a square or rectangular window, a circular cutout on a construction site wall, large triangular marble slabs on the side of a building  there are numerous architectural details of multitude shapes, the repeated pattern of a floor or walkway, and even to lights and shadows that form dramatic shapes and geometry. Shapes and geometry are all around us in our environment and create balance and structure as well as add interesting graphic detail to the composition of a photograph. Sometimes, even how we frame a photo creates a geometric pattern or shape. The options are literally endless!

We are excited to view your submissions each month and look forward to curating your photographs for this next ‘Shapes and Geometry’ showcase.

A recap of our rules and procedure for entry:

For the challenge please post only FOUR photos to our Flickr challenge site and in your title description include ‘StreetWise Shapes and Geometry’.

Hello Everyone!

We are in the process of curating our September Showcase and wanted to thank you for submitting such wonderful images  we look forward to sharing it with you soon!

The theme of our next challenge is “Reflection in the Street’

Deadline: September 31, 2016

“A photograph can be an instant of life captured for all eternity that will never cease looking back at you.” — Bridget Bardot.

While walking in the streets there are reflections everywhere, in windows, mirrors, on rainy days, in puddles, on metallic and shiny surfaces, that capture our attention — sometimes we even see our own reflection when capturing a photo. This challenge is to find those reflections and figure out how to capture them that makes for a great photo.

We are excited to view your submissions each month and look forward to curating your photographs for this next ‘Reflection” showcase.

A recap for the rules and procedure for entry:

For the challenges please post up to FOUR photos to our Flickr Challenge Site and in your title or description include ‘StreetWise  Reflection’.

Hello Everyone!

We are in the process of curating our August StreetWise showcase and wanted to thank you all for submitting such great images – we look forward to sharing it with you soon!

The theme of our next challenge is ‘Accessories in the Street’.

CHALLENGE 5: ‘Accessories in the Street’

Deadline:  August 31st, 2016

“Know, first, who you are, and then adorn yourself accordingly.” Epictetus, First Century, AD

While walking the streets it is evident that the height of the summer season is upon us, given the attire and accessories that people are adorning themselves in.

Our challenge this month is  ‘Accessories’ – hats, sunglasses, shoes, purses, jewellery, watches, etc.

As photographers in the streets we are always scanning our environment for light, shadows, people, animals, situations etc, that capture our attention – the ‘decisive moment’. When taking photos of people, we often will notice interesting characters and often what makes them stand out in a crowd is the clothes or accessories they are wearing – and, it can be that their accessories can make the difference between capturing a good photo versus a great photo.

We are are thrilled to view your submissions each month and look forward to seeing and curating your photos for this next ‘Accessories’ showcase.

A reminder we have two Flickr groups – please post your challenge photos to the following link labeled in the title or description with ‘StreetWise Accessories Challenge.’

A recap of the rules and procedure for entry:

For challenges please post up to four photos to our Flickr Challenge Showcase Site and in your title or description include ‘StreetWise – Accessories’.
