Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 21 October 2018

One late night this week, on the tube homeward bound, I was accosted by a couple. One sat purposefully too close to me, physical and personal boundaries abandoned, and the other, opposite, knocking knees. The woman, her head leaning on my shoulder, was stonned I would say and the man somewhat addled, suffering a huge headache, I was stone cold sober. Once they penetrated my wired vigilance I got chatting. Apparently, they had mistaken me for Rosemary Bennett, The Times, Social Affairs Correspondent but they couldn’t quite marry up my constrained chronological age and hers. Admiring my skin, my clothes, my rings, my voice, I felt owned and whilst living in their fantasy as the train rattled on with their relentless chatter, my thoughts turned to the ‘Portrait of Christina’ by Lieutenant Colonel Mervyn O’Gorman, c1913. This is an image created more than a century ago of a woman, with lavish strawberry blond hair, modelling a scarlet coat on a far flung beach. She raises her face to the dawn, the sun streams over her soft freckles with her radiant complexion. The identity of the woman became a 100 year old mystery and caught the attention of the world’s press. It recently became known that her full name was Christina Elizabeth Frances Bevan and she was born in Harrow, UK on 8 March 1897, a neighbours daughter of the O’Gorman’s. It’s unlikely that my identity will remain a 100 year old mystery, what will ensue is ultimately, the ethical and sometimes contemplative aspect of our art, mobile art, as it  holds our lives together. The humanity of our work, holds our hopes, our dreams, good art needs internal space and we can call upon it, any time we want, pay attention and you will see.
