The myriad of new material that greets me each Sunday morning in our Mobile Photography and Imagery Flickr group is always so full of hope and its a privilege to wake up to. This weeks Showcase is deeply and satisfyingly intelligent at its heart. It’s emotionally and intimately audacious but also compassionate, benevolent and warm. Perhaps what’s most extraordinary and moving about this body of work is the portrayal of modern day mobile photography and art psyche at its heart. This Showcase represents my weekly gift as each one of you absolutely and defiantly rise above the queasy mire of traditional photography noise and triumph. Enjoy!

Thank you to all artists for submitting your works. If you would like your work to be considered for entry in to our weekly Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group, please submit it to our dedicated group, here.

To many artists in this weeks Mobile Photography & Art Showcase, and beyond, mobile art is a coping mechanism. Creating art allows us to live alternative lives, whether for ourselves or for our subjects. This weeks showcase should be recognised as own emblem, forever moving forward whilst simultaneously sensing time’s passage, evidence that is cognizant in our art. Dorothea Lange said it best with “A camera is a tool, for learning how to see without a camera“. This week we share a brilliantly delineated context of imagination whilst recognising among the first avant garde artists of the mobile camera. Enjoy!

Thank you to all artists for submitting your works. If you would like your work to be considered for entry in to our weekly Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group, please submit it to our dedicated group, here.

It has been said (‘Teenagers: A Natural History’: David Bainbridge, 2010) that teenage years are to develop the brain and as such they are the greatest achievement of evolution – the point where all that is special about our species comes into play. For parents of teenagers, it’s our job to look after them while they are incubating their extraordinary craniums. “Adolescence is the reason we live so long, long, long,” says Bainbridge. “Human longevity has evolved because we need to bring up our intensely supported, slowly developing offspring.” And that’s of course intensely important, being a parent at this stage is a constant negotiation between keeping them safe and letting them go. It’s about balance as in life as in art. We all need to trust, It’s fierce trust, it demands you put forth your work, without knowing an outcome because fierce trust knows that the outcome does not matter, it cannot matter. Keep sharing your work, each one of you reading this was born to create. Ask yourself, how fierce is your trust in that love? Keep creating, keep viewing, it’s our labour of love.

Mobile Photography – Instagram TAKEOVER with @coeiphoneart – Gerry Coe from Belfast, UK – Days 6 – 9

We are so excited with our latest Instagram TAKEOVER this time with @coeiphoneart – Gerry Coe. Coe is an Internationally acclaimed Portrait Photographer, working in Northern Ireland known for both his Award winning Portraiture and his Fine Art images.

He is a Fellow of each of the four main photographic organisations including the British Institute of Professional Photographers, Master Photographers Association, Royal Photographic Society and the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers and he has just recently received his Second Fellowship from the BIPP for his much acclaimed iPhone Photography images. This is the first time anyone, anywhere has achieved a Fellowship in iPhone or Mobile Photography. He is the first Double Fellow of the BIPP in Ireland and one of a very small group of double Fellows worldwide. Recently he was also awarded an honourary fellowship from the BIPP, this is a rare award only 20 of these have been awarded in the 140 year history of the BIPP.

Please take a look at our @TheAppWhisperer Instagram account to follow all the goings on and please also tag your images with #TheAppWhisperer, so that they can be found and potentially featured.

He writes:

“@coeiphoneart Day 6, today’s choice is an image by @odinvadim – Vadim Demjianov. This snow scene looks like a Victorian postcard. It has been beautifully captured with a lovely soft light coming across the scene. To my eye there has been very little manipulation of the image apart I suspect the warm glow. I think this shows you don’t need lots of extra textures to have a great photograph. Well done.

@coeiphoneart Day7 street portraits are always popular and this one by @ilanaakoundi – Ilana Akoundi intrigues me I love the play of shadows on the wall. The added bonus is the person walking across the scene who has his hand up as if shading his eyes.

@coeiphoneart Day 8. Fascinating image by @dleibo  – David Scott Leibowitz, so many stories and questions. The woman in the white dress helping her child climb around the wall, the guitar is it hers or does it belong to someone else we can’t see. The photographer is she taking a picture of them, or of the building. The woman sitting at the top of the steps, is she counting her money or sorting out things in her bag? And the man walking into the scene. A superb image.

@coeiphoneart Day 9 A superb monochrome image by @allophile_ – Joseph Cyr, I love the textures and strong lighting. The footprints coming across the picture breaking up the pattern in the sand where they meet up with the shadow which brings your eye back to the tufts of grass, then you start the journey again. A simple image but full of drama”.

Sometimes when curating and putting together our mobile photography and art showcase, as I work long hours, tiredness creeps in and it’s at those times when semi consciousness takes over and the real creativity happens. I think this is the case for many artists, creativity can not be turned on and off with the flick of switch, sometimes it takes a while for it to start building and smouldering and as the heat builds and builds it becomes the all encompassing climax of our vigorous lives. There is much talent in this showcase, matched with fierce, compassionate and revelatory art. Enjoy this piercingly tender film, it’s one that will make you laugh, cry and reflect on what life is all about and for me, that’s kindness, rooted in true respect for human dignity and equality – a society without kindness would be a much sadder place. Love to you all, always…

I’ve been really excited this week because I have created a new interview platform within TheAppWhisperer that allows artists to answer the textual questions we ask, visually and the results have been spectacular. I have wanted to do this for sometime. As I explained elsewhere on the internet, my thought processes behind this format of interview are based on not only my life experiences but also on some of my professional qualifications. I have been surrounded my entire life by people who find communicating in a neurotypical way, difficult. I believe and have always believed that the onus is on the person trying to interpret what is being communicated, to understand. Just as a profoundly deaf person uses sign language to communicate with another, to understand, we also need to acquire it, so we can transcribe their thoughts and communicate ours to them. There is an integral part of our society who share difficulties with communication and because of this, many struggle with relationships and this hinders not only their own but also our life experiences. Many of you will be aware of Temple Grandin, in Thinking in Pictures, she explains “words are like a second language for me”. Many years ago, I shared an audience with her, a truly remarkable presence. I am not suggesting here, for one moment that visual artists are on the autistic spectrum, it is far more complex than that but I am aware that their images, portray their best chance of being understood. Therefore, if we are to truly embrace all of society, we need to allow them to communicate to us, in their natural default way and we need to think laterally and to re-skill. Language can be the barrier, it is up to us to lower the fence if we are to truly unriddle their psyches. When we enter an art gallery, rarely are we met with an oral interpretation of the images displayed on the walls. There’s almost a silence, with many people gathered around a painting as each of their brains scramble to decipher what they are viewing. It’s an observation that is fascinating to view and it is one that visual artists also find compelling, you’ll see many examples of this in our weekly showcase of mobile photography and art. The world needs all of us, we are all interested in art, the great mobile artists that we see here, in this weeks mobile photography and art showcase, are not so much theologians as brilliant analysts of the human heart.

Thank you to all artists for submitting your works. If you would like your work to be considered for entry in to our weekly Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group, please submit it to our dedicated group, here.
