There’s war, poverty, crushing injustice all over—what right do I have to talk back to all that…

The tranquility of rivers is never so close than in deep summer, rivers awaken our senses, renewing connections with nature. I’ve never lived far from a river almost like a magnet I’ve always been pulled towards one. They all have a destination and they travel relentlessly, unlike a lake. I have many favourites but perhaps if I had to select one, it would be the Ouse, in Sussex, not far from where my eldest son went to boarding school. In many ways this river is ‘owned’, in the sense that it is also known as Virgina Woolf’s river, it is where she drowned herself, whilst London was being battered by…

This weeks Saturday Poetry, matched with mobile photography/art is entitled The Flame Tree by Evelyn Flores. She is an Indigenous CHamoru poet and the co-editor of Indigenous Literatures from Micronesia (University of Hawaiʻi Press, 2019). “As it had been for the rest of the world, it had been a year of death and dying for us in the wake of the virus. On an island like Guåhan where families are connected in many different ways, we walked about in a state of shock that this could be happening. Then it was that my neighbor leaning across the fence talked about poisoning the flame tree. Although it made sense, something inside…

This week my favourite book publisher, MACK books sent me their title SCUMB Manifesto by Justine Kurland, to review and I love it! Inspired by Valerie Solanas’ iconoclastic feminist tract SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men), SCUMB Manifesto introduces us to photographer Justine Kurland’s own uncompromising initiative: the Society for Cutting Up Men’s Books. And she does just that, books by 150 white straight men are cut up and reconfigured into her own intricate interpretation. Books by Stephen Shore (American Surfaces), William Eggleston (Los Alamos), Larry Clark’s (Tusla), Martin Parr’s (Think of England), Alec Soth’s (Sleeping by the Mississippi), Brassaï’s (Paris by Night) and last but not all, Robert Frank’s (The…

Mobile Art Saturday Poetry – ‘In Praise of Dreams’ by Gary Soto
This weeks Saturday Poetry, matched with mobile photography/art is entitled ‘In Praise of Dreams’ by Gary Soto. He says of this poem “years ago, a poet friend showed me a photo of her cat, taken on the spur of the moment, with a cigarette in her furry chops. The cat was walking across a thick springy lawn. If I hadn’t trusted my friend, I would have shrugged and said, ‘I don’t believe it for one second—get me another beer, please.’ This poem of mine is all about the unbelievable, which visits me in dreams, with the help of godsend Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska.” I have matched mobile art by @nika.novich.art –…
