Mobile Movies Showcase – Week 39 – by Donna Donato
Welcome back to the thirty-ninth article in the column, Mobile Movies. We at TheAppWhisperer have been inspired by the Flickr upgrade of 1 Terabyte of storage for everyone and have wanted to launch a mobile movie section for some time. Now seems to be perfect, the new Flickr upgrade will allow for a full three minutes of 1080p HD quality video per single film and you can have as many as you have storage space for. Each week I (you can find me on Flickr here) will curate the movie uploads to our new Flickr group –MobileMoviesTheAppWhisperer – I will view all the videos uploaded and comment on the ones selected.
”The internet has created other crossroads for films and videos. Mobile devices have democratized not only photography but also video-making. The availability of apps that give digital video the appearance of analogy film, such as grainy black and white super-8, is exciting and important. Now anyone with the desire can make a home movie or ‘film’ and upload it to the web. It is interesting to see what stories and messages people are creating and disseminating.’
All of the entries were either shot or created on mobile devices.
Here is TheAppWhisperer’s video showcase for August 23, 2014. ‘one day [part 1]’ – shirleyforsyth

This black and white video was a little eerie; rather like looking around a doll spirit haunted room. I really enjoyed the sound design, particularly the little girl’s voice. The mood of the piece is such that I kept wondering if I would encounter something really creepy.
‘August the 12th, 2014 (The grasshopper)’ – Vanessa Vox

Recently I was lamenting the lack of summer grasshopper sightings in Paris. This piece provided that much need dose of grasshopper. Couldn’t help marveling over the color and natural camouflage of the insect. Also enjoyed listening to the accompanying music while watching up-close feeding views.
‘BMW Isetta – The little Big one’ – Ger Van den Elzen Photography

With its 60s spy movie music, the dappled light and leaf shadow and the loving shots of the car’s exterior and interior, the piece is calculated to make you swoon for this ride. What a funny little car it is! Looks like a combination of various ‘hip’ 1960 vehicles from a variety of makers! It this isn’t a promo piece for BMW it should be!
‘Fountain Fun!’ – kimartino1 Hipstafiend_Kim Martino

As summer in the northern hemisphere quickly comes to a close, this piece already feels slightly nostalgic. Love the novel water delivery system and the ambient sounds of childish happiness and joy.
‘The Family Cabin at Shawnigan Lake .. Canada’ –Nick Kenrick

This piece has the feel of a home movie shot by the occupant doing a “look around’ before the summer cabin is closed for the season. The music added to the sense of yearning and impending end of a moment.
‘The best person who can help you out of your problems is the one yu see in the mirror ~ Nishan Panwar‘ – Armineh_H

The title of this piece says it all! Found the image of the hand and steering wheel symbolic of our attempts to navigate through this journey of life.
‘Head and aches’ – SLP

This black and white, four-screen piece with its halved faces, reaching fingers and rotating circles could easily represent aches and pain. Liked hearing the casual ambient sound, which included jazz in the background and the videographer moving about and whistling along with the music for a few notes.
‘Untitled’_Roger Guetta

Really enjoy seeing the various surreal images artists are able to create using the ‘Matter’ app. This piece with its shadow standing, hand outstretched ‘balancing’ a moving ring is open to interpretation.
‘self’ – philippe_schlossberg_Phillippe Schlossberg

This video is composed of a slightly menacing image worthy of any sci-fi film. The figure seems to be watching the rotating shapes that mirror / reflect its visage.
‘The walk to the tube’ – Danisalvadori_Dani Salvadori

Liked the color and technique used in this piece, which caught a man in mid-stride. The revolving and pivoting square continuously displays a moment frozen in time.
‘From the Heavens’ – Chad Rankin / @sirreal

Using screechy, mechanical music and a barren moonscape populated with two small children and disks slicing through the air, this piece creates a very Daliesque scene.
‘ip_20140725_8498.mp4’ – Jiri Dvorak

Had to smile when I watched this piece. Who wouldn’t pause to look if he/she passed a tree and noticed disks rotating under the branches? I would look, photograph and telephone the nearest UFO hotline.
