Joanne – Let’s start at the beginning of the day, how does your day start?

Federica – My day starts early with my favorite alarm music – Reincarnation by Kenji Kawai, a mix of choir singing wailing and lamenting. I think It’s my best soundtrack to start all of my day working. After having a light breakfast while watching my favorite websites I feed my cat Ubik, and I commute to work.

Joanne – Do you like to head out and take photographs early on?

Federica – Milan, the city where I work, is a busy city so not unusually I find myself alone with in the car listening to music and shooting the unusual and inspiring things I encounter during my ride. I love early exploration indeed.

Joanne – How did the transition from traditional photographer to iPhoneographer develop? (pardon the pun)

Federica – I think the evolution was pretty natural, I had this ‘eye’ in my hands and began to use it. It’s just my attitude to freeze things so they don’t go away.

Joanne – Do you like to download new iPhoneography apps regularly?

Federica – I am quite conservative in many things and this applies to photography as well. Even if I am curious to see how things evolving in the field I usually rely on good old tools.

Joanne – How often do you update your existing apps?

Federica – Here technology helps a lot, whenever there is an update, I’m eager to update.

Joanne – Where’s your favorite place in the world for a shoot?

Federica – May be my best place to shoot is inside me, so it’s just whenever the filter I have in myself is triggered by something, like a particular light, a place or a smell. No place is unusual and none is usual for me, every thing can be seen in many different ways.

Joanne – Do you also use iPhoneography tool apps, such as The Photographer’s Ephemeris?

Federica – Really I didn’t know this app before a Google search.. TPE is very interesting in its kind, I think I’ll try it soon even if I much prefer to leave everything to the case.

Joanne – If so, do you use them to plan your shoot?

Federica – Probably the Weather apps are my best mates when I decide to plan my shoots. I live in a region where the weather is quite variable and often foggy with low light during winter months. Well, may be The Photographer’s Ephemeris could be useful.

Joanne – What are your favorite, at the moment, iPhoneography apps?

Federica – I currently work well with a set of apps, Snapseed, Pixlromatic, Artstudio and Scratchcam. My shots instead are taken only with 6×6 app.

Joanne – Where do you like to upload your photographs? Flickr, Instagram?

Federica – Two years ago I started to post my pics on Instagram, and in parallel on Flickr which I was already using for my Dslr shots. Now there are a lot of places where to post but my favorites are IPA, Eyeem and P1xels. I still post on IG too, mostly out of habit.

Joanne – Do you take photographs with your iPhone everyday?

Federica – Yes, whenever something interesting catches my eyes, one of the good things about having an iPhone is that it is always at hand.

Joanne – What are your favorite subjects?

Federica – The place I like best are the ones that convey to me a sense of decay, of passing time, I like it when time wipes away structures leaving just the rusty remains and memories.

Joanne – How did the teaching side come along?

Federica – Simple there is no teaching: part of the game is learning by myself and it is challenging; obviously I learned a lot from other iPhonographers about creativity and about techniques and apps as well.

Joanne – What are you top five tips for iPhoneography?

Federica – I think good starting points are the shot, the angle, the light. These are the base of each photo, and in iPhonography I think they are not to be overlooked because the limitation of the lens of the iPhone. Another important thing is knowing how to use the apps at the best of their potential, focusing on the ones that we feel we know better.. Imagination, creativity and feeling are important to achieve a good result as well.

Joanne – Do you edit images on your iPhone or do you prefer to do that on a desktop/laptop?

Federica – I always edit images on my iPhone, this has become my main enjoyment and seeing the results of processing made by a telephone, is satisfying to me.

Joanne – Do you enjoy videography with your iPhone?

Federica – Sometimes I like to shoot some short video using the 8mm app, clips from situation but then I haven’t time enough to put something together.

Joanne – Where do you see the future of iPhoneography?

Federica – iPhoneography is a wonderful tool for expression but can also be the key to extreme banality; I don’t know if this will have a lasting impact, it might end up as a temporary fashion as many others.

Joanne – What do you think is the most popular area of iPhoneography?

Federica – think it could be the Street photography, the iPhone is perfect to take pictures in all conditions and without being seen.

Joanne – Do you think it’s country specific, are some nations more clued up?

Federica – Probably is related to the diffusion of the iPhone, I don’t know. I have many iPhonographer friends from everywhere in the world.

Joanne – What are your first impressions of the iPhone 5?

Federica – I’ll wait the next iPhone hoping for more innovation. For now I’m fine with my 4s.
