Gray’s Anatomy – Amazing Competition!

It’s Friday again, another whirlwind week is drawing to a close and a long bank holiday weekend (in the UK at least) and what better way to start that than by reading Richard Gray’s latest Gray’s Anatomy column article. Take it away Richard (foreword by Joanne Carter).

This week Gray’s Anatomy brings you something slightly different. Rather than the usual witty incisive analysis of the world of iphoneography, it brings you straightforward good news! Yes, good news! Which is that Richard Gray (the actual Gray’s Anatomy columnist) and the App Whisperer (home of Gray’s Anatomy) have teamed up to bring you the most amazing competition. (Whenever they say “teamed up”, I can’t help imagining a shady meeting in a darkened bar in the Mid-West in the middle of the afternoon. No such shenanagans (you try spelling it) between the Gray’s Anatomy columnist and the App Whisperer I can assure you). The prize for the competition is a place on Richard Gray’s Advanced iPhoneography Group workshop in London, which normally retails at £100. The workshop comprises five weekly three-hour evening sessions in the very central London location of Piccadilly. It’s aimed at people who have a fairly good knowledge of mobile photography and the apps already and its objectives are to get students out of their comfort zones to experiment with new subjects, techniques and approaches. The first set of dates sold out immediately and has proved really popular. You can see some of the students’ really amazing work here, covering such subjects as portraits, street, slow shutter, light and story-telling in photos. It’s also a very sociable face-to-face affair in a very online world. The first workshop will be held very soon: 6:30pm on May 13. See here for all the other dates, details and to see who else has already signed up.

Sound tempting? All you have to do is to tag up to 10 of your photos with #AiGChallenge that you consider to be “advanced”. Take that as you will: advanced in terms of technique, complexity of meaning or experimentation. Then like the App Whisperer’s Facebook page here and cross your fingers! Good luck!

ps We pride ourself on our integrity at Gray’s Anatomy and, to be honest, we launched the competition last Tuesday and were planning to announce the winner today, but unfortunately we only got one entrant and it looks like they live in Australia (though with some very good pictures that could still win and it would be well worth the plane fare!). Apologies to @michmutters, we hope you understand.

Richard's mobile photography has been exhibited around the world and published in various magazines and on many websites. He launched the world's first live course in iPhone photography in early 2012 with Kensington and Chelsea College. He has given workshops with The Photographers' Gallery and British Journal of Photography. Sport England recently commissioned him to cover various of its Sportivate initiatives with the iPhone. A keen observer of this new photographic genre, his writing has been widely published (most notably in The Guardian) and he writes a blog (iphoggy-bloggy). With a big camera, he specialises in music photography (rugfoot.net) and syndicates to Press Association (with both big and small cameras).
