Mobile Movies Showcase – Week 28 – By Donna Donato
Welcome back to the twenty-eighth article in the column, Mobile Movies. We at TheAppWhisperer have been inspired by the Flickr upgrade of 1 Terabyte of storage for everyone and have wanted to launch a mobile movie section for some time. Now seems to be perfect, the new Flickr upgrade will allow for a full three minutes of 1080p HD quality video per single film and you can have as many as you have storage space for. Each week I (you can find me on Flickr here) will curate the movie uploads to our new Flickr group –MobileMoviesTheAppWhisperer – I will view all the videos uploaded and comment on the chosen ones.
”The internet has created other crossroads for films and videos. Mobile devices have democratized not only photography but also video-making. The availability of apps that give digital video the appearance of analogy film, such as grainy black and white super-8, is exciting and important. Now anyone with the desire can make a home movie or ‘film’ and upload it to the web. It is interesting to see what stories and messages people are creating and disseminating.’ All of the entries were either shot or created on mobile devices.

‘April the 30th, 2014’ – Vanessa Vox
Found that I watched this piece both with and without sound. Liked the frenetic, slightly claustrophobic music and the way the vignetted edges of the frames and the featured tops with their shadows danced and pulsated to the beat. Watching it silently I was aware of the elegance of the toys and the skill involved in ‘throwing’ them to maintain a spin for such longer periods of time. Smiled at the last shot of what appeared to be eyes.

This silent montage brought to mind Kurt Schwitters’ collages, aerial views of the earth and subliminal suggestion.
‘The dreams of the Jellyfish’ – Aldo Pacheco
Liked this piece with its ethereal music that seemed to hover somewhere between heavenly and the edge of horror. The jellyfish were the stuff of dreams with their undulating, slightly alien beauty and the menace of a possible sting.
‘Cry’ – robin robertis
When I looked at some of the images in this montage I thought of an Italian theatre piece called “Urlo” which I always choose to translated as cry, as in ‘I cry out’. Loved the Beatles tune and almost felt I was watching a newly released video for the song, perhaps a photo journey of an illness.
*Urlo means I shout, yell or howl.
