Mobile Photography & Art – Saturday Poetry – ‘What is Water?’ by Danielle Legros Georges
This weeks Saturday Poetry, matched with mobile photography/art is entitled ‘What is Water?’ by Danielle Legros Georges. Georges is the author of The Dear Remote Nearness of You (Barrow Street Press, 2016) and was chosen as Boston’s second poet laureate in 2014. Georges was born in Haiti and raised in the United States. She received a BA from Emerson College in Boston and an MFA in poetry from New York University. She is the author of two poetry collections: The Dear Remote Nearness of You (Barrow Street Press, 2016), winner of the New England Poetry Club’s 2016 Sheila Margaret Motton Book Prize, and Maroon (Curbstone Books, 2001). She has received fellowships from the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund, the Boston Foundation, the Black Metropolis Research Consortium, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
“This poem began as an attempt to identify the onset of dynamics that ultimately force a group of people to leave their home country, in this case Haiti. I think maybe the question is where does one start a story involving oppression and freedom?” she explained.
I have matched Alix Carmichele – @alix_carmichele’s image with this poem. You can follow her work on Instagram here.

‘What is Water?’ by Danielle Legros Georges
What is water but rain but cloud but river but ocean
but ice but tear.
What is tear but torn what is worn as skin as in as out
as out.
Exodus. I am trying to tell a tale that shifts like a gale
that hurricanes and casts a line
that buckles in wind that is reborn a kite a wing.
I am far
from the passage far from the plane of descending
them,
suitcases passports degrees of mobility like heat
like heat on their backs.
This cluster of fine grapes Haitian purple beige
black brown.
