Mobile Movies Showcase – Week 33 – by Donna Donato

Welcome back to the thirty-third article in the column, Mobile Movies. We at TheAppWhisperer have been inspired by the Flickr upgrade of 1 Terabyte of storage for everyone and have wanted to launch a mobile movie section for some time. Now seems to be perfect, the new Flickr upgrade will allow for a full three minutes of 1080p HD quality video per single film and you can have as many as you have storage space for. Each week I (you can find me on Flickr here) will curate the movie uploads to our new Flickr group –MobileMoviesTheAppWhisperer – I will view all the videos uploaded and comment on the chosen ones.

”The internet has created other crossroads for films and videos. Mobile devices have democratized not only photography but also video-making. The availability of apps that give digital video the appearance of analogy film, such as grainy black and white super-8, is exciting and important. Now anyone with the desire can make a home movie or ‘film’ and upload it to the web. It is interesting to see what stories and messages people are creating and disseminating.’

All of the entries were either shot or created on mobile devices.

Here is TheAppWhisperer’s video showcase for June 14, 2014. We would like to thank this week’s contributors: Andrea Bigiarini, Gazzara iPhone Fotografie, Clearer Reflections_David Hayes, Vanessa Vox, Aldo Pacheco, Armineh_H, Frelu_Cristian Margarita , Mike M Ryan, clix2020_Clint Cline, Hans Borghorst, and Diana Nicholette Jeon for their submissions. Take a look at these latest gems; you’ll be glad you did. Please share our Column with your family and friends, encouraging them to create and submit their mobile videos. We are seeking all platforms, Windows, Android, iOS… Joanne Carter and I will also be scouring the web in search of mobiles movies to present to our readers.

‘In her dreams – 2’ – Andrea Bigiarini

In this black and white piece the viewer looks through a dreamer’s eyes as she wanders her dreamscape city of Florence. The eerie soundtrack, which was composed by Andrea Bigiarini, is worthy of a horror film.

‘cars’ – .Gazzara iPhone Fotografie

This sepia colored piece with twangy guitar pays homage to the cars of yesteryear. It recalls those Sundays when pride filled families went ‘for a ride’ in their nice, shiny automobiles.

‘Such is love (part 1)’ – Clearer Reflections_David Hayes

Liked this piece with its rose floating in water and gurgling sound. It reminded me that sometimes love does drain away.

‘Shadow creature’ – Vanessa Vox

This piece was, well… sweet.  From the opening “hi”, your mouth involuntarily turns up at the corners and the smile stays until the end. Could there possibly be a sequel of the creature’s adventures?

‘The ice cream truck passing by’ – Aldo Pacheco

This video, which looks like it was shot with outdated film, conjures up memories of city summers at magic hour, the time just before sunset.  I liked the slightly mournful music with its occasional wheezing sound.

‘Weeeeeee’ – Armineh_H

Weeeeeee is right! Initially thought I was looking at falling petals only to quickly discover something else entirely. This silent piece felt like a trip to a futuristic city followed by a visit to a neon memorabilia section.

‘Exanglz’ – Frelu_Cristian Margarita

With its trance music and undulating geometric panel this piece welcomes the viewer to relax and groove for a moment.

‘Wind Runners 2’ – Mike M Ryan

I liked this well crafted video with its appearance of having been shot with a ’tintype’ film. The catchy music added to the sense of novelty and adventure. Couldn’t help wondering what speeds the ‘cart’ could reach when the ‘sail’ caught the wind.

‘Earl: In the Morning’ – clix2020_Clint Cline

Every cafe or restaurant has its regular, solo customer. This piece uses a danceable track and one photograph to show us there can be an alternate view to what looks like a sad situation.

‘On the Road with Ludwig’ – Armineh_H

I’m not much of an automobile driver but am a fairly decent co-pilot. Loved the synchronization of the passing yellow lines, on the road and in the side mirror and the thought of blasting Beethoven. I am ready for a road trip.

‘Crossing the Bridge’ – Hans Borghorst

This black and white piece with it chorus of madly chirping birds was quite mysterious and also dreamy. I was curious if the watcher just happened to be passing by, was hidden in the bushes and/or had an assignation.

‘Run’ – Diana Nicholette Jeon

This slightly out of focus piece included text, which seemed to speak to our ‘need’ to outrun time. The music added to the sense of urgency as we run through different landscapes that possibly represent seasons.

Donna is an image-maker, historian by training and a film/video editor by vocation. From a very early age she was smitten with images of all kinds. Donna absolutely loves film and filmmaking. Currently she lives in Paris, a city that has had a long and passionate love affair with ‘the movies’ and is one of the crossroads for world cinema.

Thank you so much Donna and Joanne for including my movie in this weeks Mobile Movies Showcase, again a great collection! Btw: No, the young man had no assignation. I guess he didn’t even notice me. And he also didn’t notice the sound of the birds. He was wearing ear-phones (and maybe listening to Metallica).
