Kristen R Ghodsee has published a thoroughly researched exploration proclaiming that capitalism is bad for women. She argues, adopting some ideas from socialism ‘women will have better lives’ and of course, this includes sex. Ghodsee, an acclaimed ethnographer and professor of Russian and East European Studies, spent years researching what happened to women in countries that transitioned from state socialism to capitalism. In this book, she analysed many facets of a woman’s life – work, parenting, sex and relationships, community and authority. I love literature almost as much as I love visual art and this week I’ve been indulging in ‘The Letters of Sylvia Plath: Volume II, 1956-1963, edited by Peter K Steinberg and Karen Kukil. The relationship between Ted Huges and Sylvia Plath as we know, was astonishing in its intensity and Plath’s letters, deeply private. The tragedy of their lives is no more acute when you consider what could have been, two immensely gifted poets, who found each other and then literally tore each other apart. ‘The Big Picture’ is an idiom we use for a number of expressions. As a noun, it may mean the overall scheme of something important, as opposed to the significant details. As an adjective it can be used to describe a scheme, such as ‘these are big picture projections, we’ll sort the details out later”. We also use it informally in conversation, such as one I was having with my eldest son this morning over breakfast, (he’s home from university). Creating art allows us to live alternative lives, whether for ourselves or for our subjects.
