    Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr/Instagram Group Showcase – 17 October 2021

    2021-10-17 / 2 Comments

The transformative power of art mingled with love heighten the potential of our quotidian lives, when we consider Mobile Photography and Art, our untapped potential is as defiant as it is understated. We have produced an exquisitely crafted Showcase this week, a beautifully restrained pictorial about love, loneliness and loss is caressed sensitively as we empathetically chronicle not only the characters who grieve for people not only absent from their lives but also for the desires they have by default relinquished. As if in possession of a wonderful secret, new love represents another version of our future, trilogies of desire, reconciled as we expedite our lives. Stay in the present,…

This weeks Saturday Poetry, matched with mobile photography/art is entitled ‘The Year Before I Left For Mars’ by Margaret Rhee. She is a poet, scholar, and new media artist. The author of Love, Robot (The Operating System, 2017), she is an assistant professor at SUNY Buffalo in the Department of Media Study where she co-directs the Palah Light Lab, a media lab focused on queer and feminist poetry and gaming. She lives in Buffalo, New York. “I read a magazine article once that featured everyday individuals who signed up to move to Mars in a future time. What was extraordinary was that in order to do so, these people signed up knowing they’d…

What is remarkable about your vision, as mobile artists, is that it remains intensely human rooted in common experience, replete with doubt, frustration but also conjoined with belief and certainity. Characteristics demonstrative of our obsession with this new medium. As your journey through this weeks showcase to the centre of the lyrical and artist narrative, your destination alludes to the ultimate climax and is swiftly tempered by the safety of its harbour. This showcase is at the frontier of the world of mobile photography and art. Enjoy! If you would like your work to be considered for entry into our weekly Mobile Photography and Art Flickr showcase, please submit it…

It is interesting when you think about ‘selfies’, the word of the year adopted by the Oxford Dictionary in 2013. From the early days of photography, photographers have taken photographs of themselves. Hippolytee Bayard, created photography’s first self portrait in 1840. He actually portrayed himself as a drowned man. It is said he created this image in response to what he interpreted as a waste of his extensive research when the French government overlooked his efforts in preference of Daguerre’s process. Bayard’s selfie is interesting because it is a deliberate attempt at creative expression. Of course, since then many photographers have created selfies as an artistic expression. We’re going to…

‘Revelations‘ by Mark Stevens and Annalyn Swan, is a new biography on Francis Bacon. Following his death in 1992, an abundance of books, mostly including personal accounts from his friends, were produced and thus contained an abundance of revelations, but just when you think you’ve read and know it it all, can there be anything left to say? Yes, there is actually. This book is much more focused on his early life and career, which were initially quite mundane. But that soon changed, as he fled to London aged 17, escaping his imperceivable father, with an allowance from his mother and accompanied by his nanny, who actually accompanied everywhere until…

“It cannot be a conincidence that just about the time that photographers stopped discussing whether photography is an art, it was acclaimed as one by the general public and photography entered, in force, into the museum. The museum’s naturalistion of photography as art is the conclusive victory of the century-long campaign waged by modernist taste on behalf of an open-ended definition of art, photography offering a much more suitable terrain that painting for this effort“, On Photography, Susan Sontag, . And so, is the becoming of mobile photography and art as we all continue to elevate this artform and there are none so better artists to do so, than the…

Memories often provide a great access point for creating a body of work artwork. I’ve been looking at a series entiteld “if you get married again, will you still love me?“. Essentially,  separated fathers were asked for memories of words spoken to them by their children. Utilising this information and based upon the spoken responses and what images they invoked in the artists mind, Sharon Boothroyd tried to understand what the children may have been thinking or feeling at the time. The series presents emotional moments, often out of view from the public space, of fathers with their children or children contemplating their new life not living with their father.…

Walk with me.. I’ve been lecturing on Sophie Calle this week. Calle became known for creating emotional artwork from her own personal experiences. She once spontaneously followed and photographed a stranger, a man, all the way to Italy. Another time, she found a lost address book and interviewed and photographed everyone within it about the owner and then published the results in a French newspaper. One time, she chanced a job as a chambermaid in a Venetian hotel, just so she could photograph all the mess and details left behind. Even before my dear friend Tracey Emin portrayed her famous bed, Calle opened up her own bed and invited strangers…

“When in love, the sight of the beloved has a completeness which no words and no embrace can match : a completeness which only the act of making love can temporarily accomodate”, John Berger, Ways of Seeing, 1972. The way in which we see things is affected by what we already know or what we believe we know. By making a distinction between imagery and text as information systems, we know that seeing comes before words but when you read a sentence, you read it from beginning to end, in a linear way; you don’t repeatedly return to different words within the sentence and reread them. When you look at…

Art therapy has the power to relieve trauma and I believe it should be used widely to help survivors rebuild their lives. There seems to be a general consensus that more should be done to end slavery and trafficking but still it is an area of criminal activity that appears to be on the rise, even as we now find ourselves in lockdown. Art therapy itself covers various forms, drawing, photography, painting, but it’s still not widely implemented in a role of healing for victims. This is a disparity that some aid organisations are not embracing, I wonder if it is because some donors are unprepared to invest in this,…
