Share

Welcome back to our fifty second post in our Tickle Your Fancysection. Tickle Your Fancy’ includes a round-up of between three to five links to articles from around the internet that have specifically interested us during the course of the week. Ones that we feel are relevant to your interest in photography and art.

Just to explain the title for this section ‘Tickle Your Fancy’ is an English idiom and essentially means that something appeals to you and perhaps stimulates your imagination in an enthusiastic way, we felt it would make a great title for this new section of the site.

Enjoy!

News just in from my friends and colleagues at Leica (not mobile but very interesting), Leica Camera AG, has announced that it is to become Sky Arts’ exclusive technical provider for ‘Master of Photography’, the first TV talent show dedicated to photography.

Scheduled to be broadcast from 21 July in the UK and Ireland on Sky Arts, in Italy on Sky Arte HD, and in Germany and Austria on Sky Arts HD, Master of Photography is a new, unique international production that aims to promote photography in all its forms of expression.

Hosted by Isabella Rossellini, the programme will involve 12 young talents – either amateur or pro photographers – from all over Europe. During the eight episodes in the series, competitors will face challenges both in the studio and outdoors, touring several European locations from Rome to Ireland and London to Berlin. A jury comprising three globally-renowned photographers and experts, Oliviero Toscani, Simon Frederick and Rut Blees Luxemburg, will select the first Master of Photography, with the winner receiving a prize of 150,000 euros plus the opportunity to host their first solo exhibition, with publication of a dedicated catalogue.

Each participant will be equipped with professional Leica products including cameras, lenses and accessories. With products from Leica’s current S, SL, and M-System ranges plus the Leica Q – the company’s full-frame compact camera – the contestants will be perfectly prepared for any photographic challenge that comes their way.

Not mobile photography but as my partner has been covering this event live, via Sweden and I found it incredibly interesting, I thought our readers might too. It’s been heavily rumoured for some time but now it is official.  Weighing less than half that of a conventional digital medium format camera, the mirrorless 50MP camera is a game changer in the world of photography.

Inspired by the brand’s iconic design heritage, the camera is ergonomic and compact, offering a handling experience unlike any other. Handmade in Sweden, the X1D combines Scandinavian sensibility with beautiful performance.

Like the iconic V System, the X1D seamlessly combines portability with excellent optical quality for which the brand is renowned. Hasselblad has ingeniously introduced mirrorless technology to digital medium format for the first time ever, creating a precision performance camera that can sit in the palm of your hand. The 50MP CMOS sensor captures the finest details with true natural colours.

Commenting on the announcement Perry Oosting, Hasselblad CEO noted: “The X1D marks a pivotal point in Hasselblad’s rich 75-year history. This camera makes medium format photography accessible to a new generation of Hasselblad users, while pushing the existing limits of photography to new heights.

A completely new family of dedicated autofocus lenses has been developed to support optical quality and portability, offering a wide range of shutter speeds and full flash synchronisation up to 1/2000th second.

Weighing just 725g and including HD video, Wi-Fi and built-in GPS, the X1D is a trusted partner and ideal travel companion. The robust exterior is dust and weather proof, providing durability to take with you wherever you go.

The X1D has been created with passionate photographers in mind, open up Hasselblad to a new generation of creatives. Ideal for those who want to create the highest quality medium format images with a straightforward and easy to use camera that can fit in the palm of your hand.

The Hasselblad X1D is priced at 7,900 EUR (ex VAT) / 8,995 USD.

Inspiring Photographic TED Talk – Visualising Enduring Love

I have created a special section within TheAppWhisperer to publish inspiring photographic related TED talks to. To read the previous articles, please go here.

Very early this morning, whilst awaking in my never lonely bed, it was quiet, calm and peaceful. I looked at my partner as he slept and thought of love, what it means, what makes us build a life with someone, how we choose, what do we look for and as life progresses the trials and tribulations, what do we cling to, why do we cling to it? So many unanswered questions.  I picked up my phone and found this fabulous TED talk that goes so well within our new section here. Stacy Baker, Photo Editor of the New York Times has been obsessed with how couples meet. When she asked photographer Alec Soth to help her explore this topic, they found themselves at the world’s largest speed-dating event, held in Las Vegas on Valentine’s Day, and at the largest retirement community in Nevada — with Soth taking portraits of pairs in each locale. Between these two extremes, they unwound a beautiful through-line of how a couple goes from meeting to creating a life together.

My Latest Vogue Column Article Published with Photographer Kiki Xue

Share

I am so pleased to see my latest article for my column at Vogue has just been published. This time I interviewed the fabulously talented photographer, Kiki Xue.

“Xue’s photographic work is marked by his belief that ‘true beauty lies within’, and there’s magic to be found. His eye is seasoned by his appreciation of art history representing Eastern and Western Cultures both traditional and modern. As he explains, “photography emphasizes the drawing part and portraiture is only a carrier of design. They are combined with each other. I like to observe different faces with different stories. For me, portrait photography puts a face to the story in my mind. It is a combination or collision of two stories, producing beauty or a sense of clash”.
