Mobile Movies Showcase – Week 35 – by Donna Donato
Welcome back to the thirty-fifth article in the column, Mobile Movies. We at TheAppWhisperer have been inspired by the Flickr upgrade of 1 Terabyte of storage for everyone and have wanted to launch a mobile movie section for some time. Now seems to be perfect, the new Flickr upgrade will allow for a full three minutes of 1080p HD quality video per single film and you can have as many as you have storage space for. Each week I (you can find me on Flickr here) will curate the movie uploads to our new Flickr group –MobileMoviesTheAppWhisperer – I will view all the videos uploaded and comment on the chosen ones.
”The internet has created other crossroads for films and videos. Mobile devices have democratized not only photography but also video-making. The availability of apps that give digital video the appearance of analogy film, such as grainy black and white super-8, is exciting and important. Now anyone with the desire can make a home movie or ‘film’ and upload it to the web. It is interesting to see what stories and messages people are creating and disseminating.’
All of the entries were either shot or created on mobile devices.
Here is TheAppWhisperer’s video showcase for July 5, 2014. We would like to thank this week’s contributors: Matthew Wylie, iCatMorris_Cat Morris, sparklingedith, Kim Martino, Ger Van den Elzen Photography, NaProsvert1_Natali Prosvetova, Vanessa Vox, Hans Borghorst, Ikbside_Leslie Burnside, Poetic Medium, Armineh_H and Mike Ryan for their submissions. Take a look at these latest gems; you’ll be glad you did. Please share our Column with your family and friends, encouraging them to create and submit their mobile videos. We are seeking all platforms, Windows, Android, iOS… Joanne Carter and I will also be scouring the web in search of mobiles movies to present to our readers.

‘Stardust’ – Matthew Wylie
I liked the fast paced music and silhouettes of the spectators as they watched the show. Stardust! What an appropriate name for a pyrotechnics display.
‘Chill’ – iCatMorris_Cat Morris
This piece will provide a brief mental respite. Listening to the trance music and watching the ever-changing kaleidoscope-like images was a mini, magical escape.
‘IMG_5411’ – sparklingedith
This video used a tiny planet type film process to turn a rather mundane occasion into something completely other. Couldn’t help thinking of a roulette wheel and that we’re all trapped in the spin of life.
‘At the car wash yea’ – Kim Martino
The ‘Car Wash’ song was put to great use in this piece. I was reminded of how the child often springs forth when adults remain inside the car as it is cleaned. They’ve been known to duck the water sprays, marvel at the soapy windows and enjoy watching the swirling, flapping strips as they collect the water beads.
‘Every day a story’ – Ger Van den Elzen Photography
Enjoyed viewing this minimalist piece with its cinematic music. It was nice to watch the filtered, dancing rays of light.
‘In my world’ – NaProsvert1_Natali Prosvetova
This piece provided a peephole into someone else’s life. I liked the spare music that accompanied the images. From the odd little boy, painted toes resting on the windowsill to the metro ride accompanying the lamp(s) it was an interesting and lively journey.
‘Looking for the fruits’ – Vanessa Vox
This video brought a smile. The face with its large, unblinking eyes partially obscured by foliage reminded me of the ‘find the hidden face’ quizzes that used to appear in the the daily newspapers.
‘Bumper cars’ – Hans Borghorst
Liked this video of funfair bumpers cars, which looked as if it had been hand-drawn. Can only assume the cloud was some type of fog spray because none of the ‘drivers’ seems unduly concerned.
‘Rain down on me’ – Ger Van den Elzen Photography
As I watched this piece the title almost felt like a command. The sheets of blowing water appeared to be nonstop and made me appreciate my dry, comfortable home.
‘Smoking Bachi Taiko drummers – short’ – Ikbside_Leslie Burnside
This short black and white piece presents three Bachi Taiko drummers in a spirited performance. Bachi is the name for the straight wooden sticks used to play Japanese talko drums.
Cyprinus: Carpio – Poetic Medium
Using what begins as a bluesy tune that seems to move towards distortion at the end, the viewer contemplates a school of carpio or carp.
‘Where I call Heaven‘ – Armineh_H
I liked the color of this piece, the loving shots of the edifice and the ambient traffic sounds. As a Frank Gehry fan, I can understand why this place would be considered heaven. The joy comes not just from the structure’s beauty but also from of the cultural events that take place inside.
‘Waterflow’ – Mike Ryan
This piece shot in sepia and paired with anticipatory music also provided a brief moment of meditation.

That was really very exciting and inspiring. Loved the whole collection. I feel like I just visited a museum and concert in shots of color and tone.
