Mobile Photography & Art – Saturday Poetry ‘The Dew and the Bird’ by Alexander Posey

Share

This weeks Saturday Poetry, matched with mobile photography/art is entitled ‘The Dew and the Bird’ by Alexander Posey. He was born on August 3, 1873, was a Muskogee Creek poet, journalist, and humorist known for his poems and Fus Fixico letters, a series of satirical letters written from his fictional persona, Fus Fixico, that commented on local and national politics of the time. He served as the editor for the Eufaula Indian Journal before passing away on May 27, 1908. The posthumous The Poems of Alexander Lawrence Posey (Crane Printers), which was collected and arranged by Posey’s wife, was published in 1910.

I have matched Award Winning mobile photographer @jilllian – Jill Lian’s untitled image to this poem. Lian is based in New York, United States. It is clear that Lian is interested in both art and science, as her macro images project the perfect combination of these interests. Her images are aesthetically pleasing whilst unmistakably scientifically captivating. Her work brings light to a whole new world that is so often overlooked, she is fascinated with this micro world full of colours, textures and relief. Not only does Lian find good subjects to photograph, she composes the images so undeniably well that the viewer is eternally gripped. You can view her work in our online gallery here.

If you would like to be featured in our Saturday Poetry section, please ensure you include the hashtag #theappwhisperer to any images posted to Instagram. This will mean we will be able to consider it.

‘The Dew and the Bird’ by Alexander Posey

There is more glory in a drop of dew,

That shineth only for an hour,

Than there is in the pomp of earth’s great Kings

Within the noonday of their power.

There is more sweetness in a single strain

That falleth from a wild bird’s throat,

At random in the lonely forest’s depths,

Than there’s in all the songs that bards e’er wrote.

Yet men, for aye, rememb’ring Caesar’s name,

Forget the glory in the dew,

And, praising Homer’s epic, let the lark’s

Song fall unheeded from the blue.
