M. Cecilia de São Thiago Announces Her First Photobook ‘Unforgettable’

I am absolutely delighted and hugely proud to announce the launch of one of our Editor’s M. Cecilia de São Thiago, first Photobook entitled ‘Unforgettable‘. de São Thiago has created a book in an incredibly unique way.

As Natalie Cole, by making use of technology, released the album “Unforgettable With Love“ de São Thiago has used a new technique that has allowed her to re-record duets from old musical records with her deceased father.  She utilises the glass negatives of stereoscopic photographs of her older brothers, taken by her father between the years of 1929 and 1944, and reinterpret’s these images, creating a coming and going between times and spaces in order to create the possibility of materialisation, the longing she feel’s of a time she hasn’t lived.

To photograph and manipulate images is to think about the depth of human relationships”, she expressed.  It is from the intensity of this phrase that de São Thiago builds a universe from family records created more than two decades before she was born.  Stereoscopic photographs of her  siblings taken by her father between 1929 and 1944 are the basis of this fabulous and imaginary timeline that connects her with the childhood of her four older brothers.

Using the most advanced digital manipulation and treatment programs, de São Thiago transforms the images taken over 70 years ago into poetic visual diaries of an experience she herself would have liked to have, thus promoting self help/phototherapy through photography and reducing the homesickness that she feels of a time she did not live.

This book is published by Ateliê Oriente Publishing House, led by Kitty Paranaguá and Paulo Marcos de Mendonça Lima in a limited first print run of 80 editions.

The online launch of this phenomenal book hosted by @atelieoriente was held earlier this week and if you missed it, I have attached the recording of it below, or you can go directly to it here. Within it de São Thiago speaks with Paulo Marcos M. Lima, from Editora Ateliê Oriente about this incredible experience.

We hope to review this book and once we have we will publish our review at TheAppWhisperer. Huge congratulations M. Cecilia de São Thiago!

About M. Cecilia de São Thiago

Award Winning artist Maria Cecilia de São Thiago, is a photographer whom resides in Brazil, South America.

de São Thiago’s photographs are exquisite and allegorical in nature. Their vitality is instrumental in pulling the viewer into a very intimate world chronicling the self and beyond.  Mysticism and spirituality have long informed de São Thiago’s practice and she is refreshingly transparent about her work.  She once told me, “my photos carry in each of them everything that I have learned, what I have lived, and what I have suffered”.

We have all brushed up against the sublime feeling of wonder, with sudden realisation that we do not know. Viewing Sao Thiago’s images enable us to recreate that emotion, allowing ourselves a bit of wonder, with the potential to forget what we think we know and to revel in the immediacy of the magic of her work, holding us close, as we unravel.

Influenced by two great Viennese modernists, Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, it’s fascinating to view the concision and extremely intelligent images that São Thiago creates. Each as luxurious, immediate and above all, tender to the next.

Our collection of de São Thiago’s work is the largest available and each print is strictly limited to one signed edition in each size.
