Mobile Photography & Art Flickr/Instagram Showcase – 18 September 2022
Why does anything exist at all? I’m an optimistic, don’t worry, but it’s a question which we all spend our lives trying, increasingly strenuously to avoid. Human life, is always held up against the massive fact of nature, impervious and indifferent to man. If we knew our exact end of life date, would we live our lives differently? When humans have brushed up closely to death, they have lived differently. I know that I do. I was lucky to survive at 24 years old with very serious liver tumours and luck really did play the main part in my survival. Consequently, I have felt on borrowed time ever since, I may live to be 96 like dear Queen Elizabeth II, however it’s most unlikely, I have a short shelf life. But the great virtue of living to that age, is that you get lots of bites of the cherry, you can keep readjusting your career, keep coming back, keep reinventing yourself. This week, much like our soundtrack, its been a party of one for me, as I continue to sofa surf in my house as the brunette is very unwell upstairs with Covid – just when you thought things may have began to get better, you realise they haven’t. So far, I’m avoiding it, I am sure my five vaccinations/boosters are playing a part. Lets hope it continues for you all too, stay safe! Joanne Carter is a British photographer, photography journalist, editor and curator and the founder and editorial director of TheAppWhisperer.com, an independent international photography publication established in 2009.Her journalism, criticism and commentary have appeared in The Times, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, Financial Times, BBC, Vogue Italia, LensCulture, Popular Photography, Android Magazine, NikonPro, DPReview, Which Digital Camera and Which Camera. She has lectured internationally on photography and mobile art, served as a juror for international photography awards, and exhibited her own photographic work across the UK, Europe, South Korea and the United States.Alongside her editorial work, Joanne's photographic and postgraduate research explores death, grief, memory, representation and social inequality through contemporary photography, participatory practice and visual research methods, with the longer-term aim of developing this work through doctoral research.Through TheAppWhisperer, she continues to publish independent photography journalism spanning contemporary photographic practice, mobile imaging, photographic apps, computational photography and emerging imaging technologies.Joanne is available for editorial commissions, photography projects, judging, curatorial work, speaking engagements, consultancy and selected collaborations.
