I personally asked London based mobile street photographer, Mark Fearnley to take over our Instagram account for seven days because he’s what I would describe as ‘a hardcore street photographer’. Fearnley’s street photography illustrates ideas, his deployment of the art, on the fertile ground he finds in London, represents the vibrant period that street photography is receiving here in Britain today. This body of work demonstrates a purity of vision, as he works in a typically British, understated way. He doesn’t intrude, so much as observe his subjects, operating on a peripheral borderland. His style of street photography is the polar opposite of street photographer Helen Levitt, not least that the majority of Fearnley’s work is black and white as opposed to Levitt’s pioneering colour photography. Nor is it similar to Vivian Maier’s street photography, there’s no glamorous women shopping, there’s no eye contact with his subjects. What there is, is an almost architectural view of street photography, with dynamic diagonal lines, silhouettes. puddle reflections, condensation perspectives through glass doors. Fearnley is a disrupter of street photography with complexity and range throughout his imagery running alongside a narrative. These stories translate into matter and space, they reach out and grab you, once seen, not forgotten. Huge thanks to Mark Fearnley what a week it has been, thank you!
