To many artists in this weeks Mobile Photography & Art Showcase, and beyond, mobile art is a coping mechanism. Creating art allows us to live alternative lives, offering escapism when reality becomes too unwelcome. Olivia Laing, (probably my favourite author) said in ‘The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone (possibly my all time favourite book), “sometimes, all you need is permission to feel. I think the easiest decision I’ve ever made is in answer to the question of whether I’d like a glass of champagne with my afternoon tea at the Langham Hotel, central London. Oh god, that is not a hard decision to make. I have a collection of great memories, what about that secret room in the bistro in Paris? Oh bliss. It’s no secret that I have been romantically linked with a vast number of visually literate artforms over the years. Art raises awareness and elicits empathy for the matters at stake but sometimes we have to bend the message towards a more subjective and conceptualised direction. When I make art, it’s intimate, romantic, dramatic, confessional, I am metaphorically seduced. I’ll never tire of romance, it’s the only vice I have and my production is expeditious.
