SHOWCASE

Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase 22 January 2017

"There were things that burned away at me, not only as a private individual, but also as a citizen of our century, our pixelated age. What does it mean to be lonely? How do we live, if we’re not intimately engaged with another human being? How do we connect with other people, particularly if we don’t find speaking easy? Is sex a cure for loneliness, and if it is, what happens if our body or sexuality is considered deviant or damaged, if we are ill or unblessed with beauty? And is technology helping with these things? Does it draw us closer together, or trap us behind screens"?  A quote from a book that I am currently reading by a truly wondrous writer, Olivia Laing. The book is entitled ‘The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone’. I urge you to read it. Laing wrote this book following the end of a romantic relationship and decided to leave Britain and head to New York. Essentially this book as is our Mobile Photography and Flickr Group Showcase this week, is about learning to befriend yourself. Laing goes on to say, "what matters is staying alert, staying open, because if we know anything from what has gone before us, it is that the time for feeling will not last". Please enjoy this multilayered showcase, the artists and their art, know no bounds. This is a showcase that is intrinsic to the very notion of being alive, right now.

If you would like your work to be considered for entry into our weekly Mobile Photography and Art flickr group, please submit it to our dedicated group, here. If you would like to view our previous Flickr Group Showcases (please go here).

Beautiful Showcase, Joanne! Thank you for including my picture. I love the music, which you have selected……

And you have addressed an interesting topic. The book by Olivia Laing is not available in German. But I’ve read the beginning on Amazon and I think I’ll be able to read it in English. I downloaded it immediately on my iPad. Thanks for this interesting book recommendation!
