‘How Photography Saved My Life’ – TED Talk with Marvi Lacar

As our regular readers will know we have a dedicated Photography TED Talk section within TheAppWhisperer, we have had this for many years. I was inspired to create this, having interviewed an incredibly talented photographer for Vogue and learning of her TED talks. The one that we are featuring today, is with Marvi Lacar, a woman so completely honest and brave, my heart goes out to her..for so many reasons… Please watch this and be inspired…

“Marvi Lacar thought she had it all figured out – immersed in a career she was excited about, in the city of her dreams, with a devoted partner to share her passions – until her father died and she fell into a deep clinical depression. How did she crawl back out of this darkness? With the help of her husband, her dog… and her camera. Marvi Lacar is a documentary photographer and director whose goal is to connect with her audience using creative visual language. Lacar started her career as a photojournalist covering domestic and international news and features stories for print publications like Time, Newsweek, New York, Stern, Paris Match and the New York Times. Lacar has received awards for her photography from Photo Levallois, Communication Arts, American Photography, Photo District News, Santa Fe Center Project Competition among others. Escape, her documentary film about the rescue and rehabilitation of Maasai girls in Kenya escaping Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and early marriage, was recognised by AI-AP International Motion Arts Awards, United Nations Association Film Festival and other national and international film festivals. After her father died in 2008, Lacar was diagnosed with acute clinical depression. This Is A Love Story, her ‘visual diary’ chronicling her own battle with depression, has been exhi This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organised by a local community”.
