There is something slightly peculiar about contemporary smartphone photography. We have never carried cameras this capable before, yet we have also never carried cameras quite so determined to decide what a photograph should look like on our behalf. Press the shutter on a modern smartphone and the resulting image may already have been assembled from multiple exposures, sharpened, denoised, tone-mapped, locally adjusted and interpreted before we have even had the chance to look at it properly.
Technically, much of this is extraordinary. Computational photography has made possible photographs that would once have been extremely difficult, if not impossible, to produce from such a small camera. But photographic progress is not always the same thing as photographic control, and an increasingly interesting group of developers appears to be recognising that distinction. Instead of asking what else the smartphone can automate, they are asking what happens when some of those decisions are deliberately returned to the person holding the camera.
I find this particularly interesting because it is not really an argument against technology. None of these applications is trying to recreate some imaginary golden age when photography was untouched by automation. Autofocus, automatic exposure and digital processing have all transformed photography long before artificial intelligence became part of the conversation. What these apps offer instead is choice: the option to decide when computational intervention is useful and when we would rather make the decisions ourselves.
Some remove processing almost entirely. Others expose manual controls that the native camera prefers to hide, build alternative RAW workflows, or place professional monitoring tools directly into the photographer’s hands. A few take the opposite approach and strip the interface back so completely that the photographer can concentrate on looking rather than operating a miniature control panel.
What connects them is not nostalgia. It is agency. These are ten photography apps that, in very different ways, refuse to take the photograph for you.
1. Better Camera: No AI — A Camera That Deliberately Does Less

Better Camera may have one of the clearest names in the App Store. Its developer, Davyd Horhiashvili, has built an iPhone camera specifically for photographers who are uncomfortable with the amount of invisible processing taking place inside the standard smartphone workflow. Rather than attempting to compete with Apple by adding another layer of automation, Better Camera offers manual ISO, shutter speed, focus and white balance alongside film simulations and a deliberately restrained processing philosophy.
What interests me is the position it occupies between two familiar extremes. On one side is the native iPhone Camera app, which is remarkably capable but increasingly computational. On the other are professional camera applications that can present the photographer with a dense cockpit of controls. Better Camera aims to sit between those positions, retaining the immediacy that makes smartphone photography appealing while returning some of the decisions that experienced photographers may want to make for themselves.
The developer describes himself as a photographer and designer with around two decades of experience shooting both film and digital, and that background makes sense when using the app. The point is not to turn an iPhone into a DSLR. It is to make the iPhone feel more like a camera whose behaviour can be anticipated rather than a photographic computer whose decisions are largely hidden.
Why I find it interesting: Better Camera does not make the iPhone less sophisticated. It uses sophisticated technology to give the photographer permission to say, “No, I’ll decide.”
2. Analogue – Film Camera — Changing the Photograph at Capture, Not Afterwards

Film simulation has become so commonplace that it can be easy to forget there is a significant difference between applying a nostalgic filter after a photograph has been made and changing the way the image is processed at capture. Analogue – Film Camera, developed by Cristian Teichner, takes the latter approach, using Log capture to produce softer highlight roll-off, restrained contrast and a less aggressively digital appearance before the photograph reaches the editing stage.
The application provides manual exposure, white balance and Kelvin control, real-time looks and LUT support, but what makes it relevant here is its rejection of some of the processing characteristics photographers increasingly associate with smartphones: exaggerated tone mapping, heavy sharpening and the sense that every area of the frame has been optimised separately. The resulting aesthetic is not necessarily “film” in any literal sense, and I would be wary of judging any digital camera purely by how successfully it imitates an analogue material. What matters more is the attempt to preserve tonal relationships that the photographer actually saw.
There is a limitation worth noting: the current version is designed for compatible Pro iPhones, including the iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro and 17 Pro families. That will exclude a substantial number of photographers, but it also reflects the extent to which developers are beginning to exploit the more sophisticated imaging pipelines available on recent hardware.
Why I find it interesting: Analogue asks a more useful question than “Which film does this look like?” It asks whether the photograph should begin with a less digital-looking file in the first place.
3. zerocam — Creative Control Through Radical Simplicity

There is an apparent contradiction in including zerocam in an article about giving photographers more control, because its approach involves removing controls rather than adding them. That is precisely why it belongs here. Creative control is not always measured by the number of sliders, dials and buttons available on screen. Sometimes the most meaningful decision a photographer can make is to choose a camera that gets out of the way.
zerocam describes itself as a zero-process camera. Its current version is built around avoiding the aggressively sharpened, flattened and overly polished appearance that can emerge from conventional smartphone processing. There are no elaborate creative modes competing for attention and no attempt to turn every exposure into a computational showcase. Instead, the application reduces the experience to something much closer to a compact point-and-shoot camera.
I find the contrast with Better Camera fascinating. Both applications are responding to broadly the same dissatisfaction with computational photography, yet one gives the photographer more manual authority while the other reduces the interface almost to nothing. One says, “Give me the controls.” The other says, “Remove the distractions.” Both can be legitimate expressions of photographic agency.
Why I find it interesting: Zerocam reminds us that control can also mean choosing what we do not want to think about while making a photograph.
4. IIWII — Manual Control Without Turning Photography Into Administration

IIWII — “It Is What It Is” — takes another route through the same problem. Developed by Joshua Johannes Hoffmann, it combines a deliberately minimalist camera with manual controls that appear when required rather than dominating the experience permanently. White balance, shutter speed, ISO and focus can all be controlled manually, while RAW+ capture, custom LUTs, double exposure and film-inspired looks provide enough creative flexibility for photographers who want considerably more than a disposable point-and-shoot experience.
The important phrase in the developer’s description is “Natural Processing”. IIWII is explicitly designed around reducing computational over-processing while retaining the convenience of a modern iPhone camera. The film looks can be previewed while shooting, and photographers can import their own LUTs, but the interface remains unusually restrained for an app with this level of functionality.
That balance matters. Photography applications often assume that anybody who wants creative authority must also want to interact constantly with camera settings. In reality, many experienced photographers want precisely the opposite. We may want access to manual control without wanting the operation of the camera to become the subject of the photograph.
Why I find it interesting: IIWII understands that giving photographers control and forcing photographers to use controls are two very different things.
5. (Not Boring) Camera — Serious Photography Without the Serious-Looking Interface

Professional camera software has developed its own visual language. Dark grey panels, small numerical readouts, histograms, tiny icons and dense rows of technical information are supposed to communicate seriousness. There is nothing inherently wrong with that approach, but (Not Boring) Camera challenges the idea that photographers need to feel as though they are operating industrial machinery in order to exercise meaningful control.
Its interface is playful and intentionally tactile, yet underneath it sits a genuinely interesting imaging proposition. SUPER RAW is designed to avoid AI-heavy or aggressively processed rendering while still providing RAW DNG and Apple ProRAW options for photographers who want to take the file elsewhere. The combination is unusual because the application is not asking users to choose between accessibility and photographic intent.
That matters more than it might appear. The interface between photographer and camera affects how we work. A camera that is technically brilliant but unpleasant to use may be opened less often. Conversely, a camera that encourages curiosity and experimentation can alter the number and type of photographs we make. The design of photographic software is therefore not separate from photography; it becomes part of the photographic process.
Why I find it interesting: (Not Boring) Camera demonstrates that serious photographic control does not have to announce itself through a joyless interface.
6. Phlow — Putting the Photographer Back in Control of the Workflow

Not every loss of control happens when the shutter is pressed. One of the more irritating aspects of mobile photography has always been the journey that follows: capture a RAW file, open another application, make adjustments, export a processed version, discover that you now have several copies of the same photograph and eventually forget which one contains the final edit.
Phlow approaches creative control from this workflow perspective. Its PhlowSync system is designed to allow photographers to capture RAW, edit non-destructively and have those changes remain associated with the original photograph in Apple Photos rather than generating the familiar trail of duplicate files. Its own RAW camera can shoot through PhlowRAW and preview looks in real time, but the more interesting idea is that deliberate image-making should not necessarily require a cumbersome post-production routine.
I think this belongs in the same conversation as reduced computational processing because control is only useful when photographers are prepared to exercise it. If a more deliberate workflow becomes so inconvenient that users simply fall back on the automatic camera, then technically providing more control has achieved very little. Good photographic software should make deliberate choices easier to sustain.
Why I find it interesting: Phlow recognises that photographers can lose control after capture just as easily as they can lose it before pressing the shutter.
7. Shutter+ — When the Smartphone Becomes Part of the Camera System

Shutter+ broadens the argument considerably because the smartphone does not have to be the camera at all. Instead, the application turns an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch into an advanced remote interface for compatible Sony, Canon and Fujifilm cameras, providing photographers with controls and monitoring tools that can exceed those offered by some manufacturers’ own companion applications.
Exposure, focus, white balance and drive settings can be controlled remotely, while tools including live view, histograms, zebras, waveform monitoring, focus peaking and image transfer move the smartphone into the wider photographic system. The app can connect directly to the camera over Wi-Fi, meaning it remains useful away from a conventional network or internet connection.
I particularly like what this says about the relationship between smartphone and traditional photography. Too much discussion treats them as competing systems: either the phone replaces the camera or the “real camera” remains superior. Shutter+ suggests a much more productive relationship. The smartphone can become an intelligent extension of another camera, adding information and control without pretending that it needs to replace the equipment already in the photographer’s hands.
Why I find it interesting: Shutter+ does not make creative decisions for the photographer. It provides better information from which the photographer can make them.
8. Halide Mark III — Making “No Processing” a Mainstream Choice

Halide is hardly an obscure application, but its inclusion here is important because of what it represents. When one of the best-known premium iPhone camera apps places “Zero AI, Natural Photos, RAW” at the centre of its current positioning, it is evidence that dissatisfaction with automatic computational rendering is no longer confined to a tiny group of photographic purists.
Halide’s Process Zero gives photographers a route around much of Apple’s standard computational processing, producing files with stronger contrast and a more natural rendering while preserving access to manual exposure, focus tools, RAW capture and sophisticated compositional aids. Halide Mark III has taken this further with photographic Looks built into the camera’s own capture and processing pipeline rather than functioning simply as filters placed over a completed image.
The significance of Halide is therefore not that it rejects computational photography altogether. It does not. The significance lies in making processing itself a choice. A photographer can decide whether a particular scene benefits from Apple’s computational approach, Process Zero, RAW or another photographic treatment rather than accepting that one invisible pipeline is always the correct answer.
Why I find it interesting: Halide helped turn the ability to say “not this time” to computational processing into a legitimate mainstream photographic feature.
9. Blackmagic Camera — An Interface That Assumes You Know What You Are Doing

Blackmagic Camera is primarily designed for filmmaking, but I think it belongs in this discussion because it represents one of the clearest examples of a smartphone application refusing to hide professional complexity simply because the device happens to be a phone. The interface draws heavily on Blackmagic’s dedicated cinema cameras and provides direct control over frame rate, shutter angle, ISO, white balance, recording format and a range of professional monitoring and production tools.
That philosophy runs counter to a large part of consumer technology design, where progress is often defined as making technical decisions disappear. Blackmagic assumes that some users actively want to understand what the camera is doing and may have very specific reasons for changing it. Rather than treating expertise as an inconvenience to be automated away, the application treats it as something worth supporting.
The relevance extends beyond video. Photography has always contained both intuitive and technical ways of working, and neither is inherently superior. What matters is whether the camera allows the person using it to work in the way the photograph requires. Blackmagic Camera is a useful reminder that “easy” and “good” are not necessarily synonyms.
Why I find it interesting: Blackmagic Camera respects photographic and cinematographic knowledge instead of assuming that progress means hiding it.
10. Juno – No AI Camera — A New Generation Saying the Quiet Part Out Loud

Juno is perhaps the clearest sign that “no AI” is becoming a recognisable category rather than an isolated marketing experiment. Developed by Richard Chinnappan, the application describes itself as a zero-processing camera for photographers who want their images to look real. Its language is unusually direct: no face reshaping, no beauty effects and no hidden processing.
The app combines that stripped-back philosophy with optional manual controls, including ISO, shutter speed, exposure compensation, white balance and focus, alongside focus peaking, aspect ratios, highlight protection and texture control. Importantly, it is not attempting to force every user into manual operation. The professional controls are available when required, while the core experience remains straightforward.
I find the privacy angle relevant too. Juno states that photographs remain on the device, without cloud uploads or data collection. That does not directly determine photographic quality, of course, but it forms part of a broader idea running through this emerging generation of apps: that photographers may increasingly want to understand not only how their image looks but also what happens to it between pressing the shutter and receiving the finished file.
Why I find it interesting: Juno shows that transparency itself may be becoming a photographic feature — not only “What does this camera do?” but also “What does it not do behind my back?”
Are We Really Seeing an Anti-AI Photography Movement?
I would be cautious about describing any of this as an outright rejection of artificial intelligence. That would be too simple, and it would also misunderstand the history of photography. The medium has always been technologically mediated. Photographers once argued about autofocus, automatic exposure, digital cameras and image stabilisation in terms remarkably similar to those now being used around computational photography and AI.
The interesting change is not that photographers suddenly want less technology. What appears to be emerging is a desire for greater transparency and choice. We want to know when a photograph has been heavily processed. We want the option to retain the shadow we actually saw rather than having it automatically lifted. We may want natural skin texture rather than a camera deciding what a face should look like, or a RAW file that remains genuinely useful because the camera has not already committed us to a particular visual interpretation.
That is a considerably more nuanced position than “AI is bad”. Computational photography can be remarkable, particularly when physical limitations would otherwise prevent a photograph from being made at all. Night modes, multi-frame processing and computational HDR have allowed tiny smartphone sensors to produce images that would once have seemed impossible. I use and appreciate those technologies. The problem begins when assistance becomes compulsory and its intervention becomes invisible.
That is why these applications interest me. They are not asking us to abandon contemporary technology. They are asking us to decide when we want it involved.
The Difference Between Technical Perfection and Photographic Intention
Photography has never depended upon technical perfection. Some of the most memorable photographs in the history of the medium are blurred, grainy, badly exposed, partially obscured or technically compromised in ways that a modern camera system might now attempt to correct automatically. Those qualities do not necessarily make the photographs successful, but neither do they automatically make them failures.
What matters is intention. A deep shadow can be a compositional decision. Grain can alter the atmosphere. Motion blur can communicate energy or instability. A clipped highlight can direct attention elsewhere. When software automatically assumes that every dark area should contain detail, every face should be optimised and every photograph should occupy a certain tonal range, technical correction begins to overlap with aesthetic judgement.
That does not mean the photographer must manually control every setting. I have no interest in returning to photographic difficulty for difficulty’s sake. What matters is whether the photographer retains the ability to intervene when the automated interpretation conflicts with the photograph they are trying to make.
TheAppWhisperer’s Picks
If I were choosing purely on the strength of the idea behind the app, Better Camera is one of the most interesting new arrivals because it has been developed so explicitly around the gap between Apple’s automatic camera and the complexity of traditional professional apps. zerocam provides the fascinating opposite response, demonstrating that less processing does not necessarily require more manual intervention.
Halide Mark III remains important because it has the maturity and technical sophistication to make reduced computational processing feel like a serious photographic choice rather than a novelty, while Shutter+ is perhaps my favourite example of the smartphone being used intelligently alongside another camera instead of continually trying to replace it.
For photographers interested in the relationship between capture and workflow, Phlow deserves attention because it recognises that creative control can disappear just as easily in post-production as it can at the moment of exposure. And Juno is particularly interesting simply because its existence tells us something about the direction in which independent camera development is moving.
The Bigger Picture: Who Actually Made the Photograph?
Autofocus did not destroy photography. Automatic exposure did not destroy photography. Digital cameras did not destroy photography, and computational photography will not destroy it either. Photography has always changed alongside its technology, and many of the tools we now regard as completely ordinary were once criticised for removing skill or decision-making from the photographer.
The more interesting question in 2026 is where we want that technological assistance to stop. If software chooses exposure, combines several frames, reconstructs detail, identifies subjects, adjusts local contrast, removes noise and decides how the finished photograph should look before we see it, the boundary between camera operation and photographic interpretation becomes increasingly difficult to identify.
Perhaps that is why applications such as these feel significant. They are not anti-technology at all. In many cases they are technically sophisticated pieces of software whose complexity is being used to create something surprisingly simple: the possibility of refusing an automated decision.
And perhaps that is the paradox at the heart of contemporary mobile photography. The most advanced camera is not necessarily the one capable of making the greatest number of decisions for us. Sometimes the more interesting camera is the one sophisticated enough to know when to give those decisions back.
