      Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 15 July 2018

      2018-07-15 / Comments Off on Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 15 July 2018

‘How to fail’ is a podcast series by journalist and novelist Elizabeth Day, whereupon she interviews celebrities and asks them to list three examples, demonstrating their  failures in life. Perhaps, not surprisingly, men somewhat balked at the idea that they’d failed at anything and when pressed, admitted to losing tennis matches, or the inability to get souffles to rise, whereas women confessed they had trouble limiting the list to just three failures. Naturally, my thoughts drifted to my own failures, where to start… trying too hard to find love as a teenager complete with ‘mistakes’…, not selling my first cottage before the property crash in 1990 when I was 21,…

Visualising Mobile Photography and Art Interview with Alon Goldsmith from the United States

2018-07-09 / Comments Off on Visualising Mobile Photography and Art Interview with Alon Goldsmith from the United States

Today, we are publishing our twenty sixth visual interview, this time with Alon Goldsmith from the United States. Goldsmith has created his own trademark style, as a pioneering mobile colour photographer. Goldsmith’s images are representative of european Harry Gruyaert’s (b.1941), when he courted Kodachrome while simultaneously exploding into the art scene which earned him entry into the hallowed Magnum photo agency in 1982. Goldsmith’s approach, much like American photographers William Eggleston and Stephen Shore, who were already taking advantage of colour potential and with which Gruyaert alined himself, have always been full of received wisdom. Each image of Goldsmith’s offers shades of colour, drawing in the viewer, he captures the prosaic moments of…

Visualising Mobile Photography and Art Interview with Jenny Pieters from Johannesburg, South Africa

2018-07-06 / Comments Off on Visualising Mobile Photography and Art Interview with Jenny Pieters from Johannesburg, South Africa

Today, we are publishing our twenty fifth visual interview, this time with Jenny Pieters from South Africa. Pieters art strikes me as bursting with emotional depth and context. There’s a tenderness within her way of seeing, mixed with hope and despair but more so with light. With an evocation of time and place, her images imbue a deep sense interconnecting with us all, deeply. Her work is about honesty and trust with immense integrity and deserving of our unmitigated respect. (foreword by Joanne Carter) I am so excited about this new Interview section within TheAppWhisperer. A picture speaks a thousand words, so says the English language idiom and as this…

‘The Big Picture’ is an idiom we use for a number of expressions. As a noun, it may mean the overall scheme of something important, as opposed to the significant details. As an adjective it can be used to describe a scheme, such as ‘these are big picture projections, we’ll sort the details out later”. We also use it informally in conversation, such as one I was having with my eldest son this morning over breakfast, (he’s home from university). He was explaining, rather alarming to me how at a nightclub last night, he narrowly avoided being stabbed because of his ability to ‘see the big picture’ and managed to…

      Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 17 June 2018

      2018-06-17 / 1 Comment

Mobile Art and its artists need their audience, this showcase manifests with my welcoming spirit, embodying feelings with a kind of jovial gratitude and there’s a reason for that. This is an elegant, charming and poetically simple showcase within its means and methods. The opening image should stop you in its tracks and the rest will take you on a journey, clearly without rudimentary structure. It is figuratively tied together with pure arte povera, in the sense of art, without the restraints of traditional practices and materials. Deep within its core, hear the screams of belief in the democratic mutuality of art. The metaphor is overwhelming. Thank you to all…

“Happily ever after is a very relative thing. I’m grateful that I get to be alive”, this is one of the many excerpts from the deepest conversations I had for many years, with our mutual friend, dear Carolyn Hall Young. I miss her immensely, everyday and everyone I’ve ever spoken to, who has known her, has the same feelings. Why is it that some people make such an impact on our lives, out of the thousands and thousands that we know now or will know, what is it, that pushes them into our hearts and keeps them there?  There are many answers to this complex question and I would say…

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style”, Maya Angelou – I couldn’t agree more… What’s happening now in the mobile art and photography scene, as in so many genres of art right now, is a revolt. It’s been building for sometime, but there’s now more urgency. And with that, artists are implored with a range of apocalyptic anxieties. Change is on the cards, however mindful we are aware of this pictorial elegance, we need to support it with passionate pleas and deft authority. At TheAppWhisperer we have a special relationship with…

Visualising Mobile Photography and Art Interview with Meri Walker from the United States

      2018-05-15 / 2 Comments

Today, we are publishing our twenty third visual interview, this time with Meri Walker from the United States. Walker’s photographs work together in this visual interview to offer a deeply personal look at her life through the lens of mobile photography. As you travel through the interview, every image invokes a sense of brooding anticipation. Piece by piece each photograph conjures up a mystery, exposing the ominous in the innoxious and revealing how seductive it can be. Fears and fantasies embroiled with the allure of terror and excitement, climaxing in a recognisable and relatable visual study, one depicting a reflection of influence to the viewer.  This interview embodies the quest for personal…

One of the many things I love about curating, producing and publishing our Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase is it offers me the facility to tap into these talented artists lives. Many of the artists that we profile each Sunday morning are extraordinarily prolific with their art and when viewing the showcase, each image doesn’t stand on its own, more so as together, context is all. The more you move among the pictures, shifting back and forrth, the more your sense of mobile photography and art deepens, expanding by the moment. All of these image take their part in a growing narrative, one we continue to explore. Enjoy!…

      2018-05-06 / Comments Off on Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 6 May 2018

Today, it’s World Laughter Day and I’ve already started… There is too much tension in our nation, our stress levels are too high, none of us are getting out of here alive, relax… When we join with others in laughter, we know how good we feel, remember? It creates social bonds, as we recognise that we’re are experiencing similar emotions, simultaneously. The therapeutic effects of laughter have been clinically studied since the 70s, but Dr Madan Kataria – who developed laughter yoga in Mumbai – is credited with bringing laughter therapy into the mainstream. Kataria set up the first laughter club in 1995. There are now more than 5,000 laughter…
