The work was “about family history and the American dream, and how those two intersect,” Larry Sultan told The Times in 1989. “My father bought a one-way ticket from New York in 1949 and ended up in a dream house in Sherman Oaks. In these trying times it can seem so hard to seek joy in the simpler things in life. Yet, it is vitally important to find solace wherever we can, for me, I turn to nature. Lighter mornings, longer days, bobbing daffodils, tweeting birds, they are all still there for us, helping to lead us away from fearful thoughts. Walking in nature, with camera phone in hand, can lead to a spontaneous forage of images. This weeks Saturday Poetry, matched with mobile photography/art is entitled ‘The Power of Hope Today’ by Gabrielle Marshall. She is a seventh-grader from Virginia. Her poem The Power of Hope Today was the third-place winner of the 2021 Inaugural Poem Contest for Students.
