Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 9 January 2022
I like to create targets for myself, that way, it helps me to keep on schedule and achieve what I intend to do. For so long, I’ve been reading one book a week and by doing so, it allows me to travel, throughout the world, there’s a sense of freedom I experience with each page turned. This week I’ve been reading a novel about economic migrancy, called The Road Home. A subject we’re all aware of but so often ignore. The author Rose Tremain tackles the issues brilliantly. The main character, Lev is 42 and has left his Russian home following the recent death of his beloved wife from leukemia…

Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 19 December 2021
Eighteen months and it still goes on, some say worse now than ever before. I’ve not started disinfecting the groceries again yet though and hope never to start. It is interesting to learn of the impact the pandemic has had on mobile art. We have have asked and published some answers to that by award winning artists here and also in another series here. What seems ever more important is how connected we all are and how much we care for one another. Many of us have experienced isolation, confinement, even claustrophobia and especially depression. Our walls enclosing us, as our government’s fail to govern. We remember our first trips…

Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr/Instagram Group Showcase – 14 November 2021
“Never say you know the last word about any human heart”, a quotation by Henry James from the rich tapestry of a book I am currently re-reading, Any Human Heart by William Boyd. Art links all around us and we need to be able to tie it altogether, to make it whole. Human expression within this weeks mobile photography and art Flickr Group Showcase, speaks to us. Worldly wise, yet perilously frail, many of these images demonstrate the agony and ecstasy of love and life lived. This weeks showcase is a wholly humane romance and a worthy treat for all of us. Enjoy! If you would like your work to…

I recently completed an essay addressing how the visual work of Rosy Martin, informed by psychotherapeutic theory, links personal memory to the construction of self. I will publish it soon but it concludes “notable psychotherapist, Sigmund Freud had two photographs on his desk, one of a patient looking well, hopeful and healthy at the start of therapy and another at the end of their therapy looking dejected, depressed and beaten by life. Freud encouraged his patients to bring him their dreams, one cannot help but ponder, knowing what we now know of phototherapy, whether bringing their photographs would have made this therapy more accessible“. Having always walked to my own…

Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr/Instagram Group Showcase – 29 August 2021
It is interesting when you think about ‘selfies’, the word of the year adopted by the Oxford Dictionary in 2013. From the early days of photography, photographers have taken photographs of themselves. Hippolytee Bayard, created photography’s first self portrait in 1840. He actually portrayed himself as a drowned man. It is said he created this image in response to what he interpreted as a waste of his extensive research when the French government overlooked his efforts in preference of Daguerre’s process. Bayard’s selfie is interesting because it is a deliberate attempt at creative expression. Of course, since then many photographers have created selfies as an artistic expression. We’re going to…

Mobile Photography/Art Showcase – 1 August 2021
Mobile Photography and Art is about, among other things, the interconnectedness of our lives, about what we choose to see and ignore as we move through our own worlds, about the power of small acts of decency. Our shared vision is so vivid and multilayered enabling what we produce to become something more than remarkable. The real joy in this weeks Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group Showcase, is the relentlessly compelling and extraordinary portrayal of lasting beauty. I have tried to create an atmosphere offering privileged access into multiple spheres of existence, discovering the secret languages of each work of art, conferring dignity and consequence with each image and…
