Thirty years ago Donna Tart’s Ancient History was published, a book that she wrote for a period of eight years. It’s a book I constantly reread, it’s inspired by my love of Greek mythology. Told in Dickensian detail “I just thought I was writing an old-fashioned, very bizarre book that was to no one’s taste except my own. I was writing it for myself and my friends,” Tartt expressed. The Open competition is where all mobile photographs should be submitted. It is normally free to enter 3 images per photographer but we are giving each of you, however many thousands of you there are, 20 additional free entries. “In these last decades ‘concerned’ photography has done at least as much to deaden conscience as to arouse it”, Sontag, S. On Photography (1979). Sontag argued that beleaguering the public with sensationalist photographs of war and poverty was a definitive way to numb the public’s response. Sontag believed that the more distressing images people viewed, the more immune they became to their impact; viewers became reduced to inaction, either through guilt or a dismissive lethargy towards making a difference.
