Streets Ahead – Challenge 2 – Showcase

Welcome to the showcase for the challenge section of Streets Ahead, a Women’s Mobile Street Photography Collective. Our second challenge is  ‘Leading Lines’ and JQ Gaines has shared some thoughts about some of photographs submitted whilst Cara created and edited the film.

The objective of the challenge is to help us collectively practice and perhaps learn some new techniques. Each challenge will be based either on a shooting technique or perhaps a theme. We would like Streets Ahead to be an interactive group and for members to try to participate in the challenges.

If you are a woman street photographer, please join our growing community.

‘Another red umbrella’ by Anne-Martine Parent (MartinaP)

A wonderful sweeping rhythm of lines feels as though they are wrapping themselves around this woman. This feels surreal… almost off balance…

‘Shadow and light’ by Cara Gallardo Weil

Elegant rhythm of dark and light angles lead us from the foreground into the background and end at a triangular space. A subtle and easily missed detail is that the man’s leg is perfectly parallel with the 45 degree angle line. Analogous lines and relationships create visual harmony…

‘Shadow lines’ by Frederique Bellec (eyephonographer)

An elegant and subtle example where the woman’s shadow is a leading line … stretched from one side of the image all the way to the other.

‘John’ by Gina Costa (gcosta9)

Two very subtle, yet clear leading lines … One, the narrow road as it reaches out from the background into the foreground… and two, the line of buildings and houses. Both direct our attention to the man who looks as though he is walking on “the line.”

‘Untitled’ by Grace Brignolle (Graceiee B)

Intriguing shadow patterns with a strong solid line leading right to the woman.

‘Untitled’ by Lee Atwell

Beautiful rhythm of horizontal lines with two strong vertical lines (one light and one dark)… leading our eyes to the couple at the top of the stairs…

‘Shadows taller than us’ by Stefanie LePape (SLP)

A Visual “Jazz” … Fantastic special division with a musical array of lines darting out in every direction. But one thin straight line leads directly to the woman standing against the column.

Absolutely stunning leading line images by all! I feel very honored to be included – heartfelt thank you! I love the inclusion of the commentary in the film and the film’s movement along the lines – wonderful Cara!
Thank you so much JQ for your infectious enthusiasm for ‘Streets Ahead,’ and thank you Joanne for all the time and work you with ‘TheAppWhisperer.’

Girls! Really fantastic images. Congrats to all selected.

I always love JQ’s excellent commentary. Excellent work Cara on the video. Zooming the leading lines was powerful. Loved the music! Experienced an optical illusion viewing Armineh’s image. As the path zoomed to the sea, I blinked and it was like seeing the wave crash. Very cool.

I would so love to be part of this discussion group, but can’t seem to bust through my resistance to join Facebook. Sigh! I’m guessing seeing these challenges, I’ll end up biting the bullet.

    Great job everyone!!

Nice gallery – just a few questions: how often are these challenges running?
How long are the deadlines? WHERE are these challenges being posted?

Suggestion: As you are promoting this as an interactive forum, it would be nice if a requirement for selection is also posting the apps/workflow in order to be considered for selection.

    Cheers!
