Mobile Photography – Huawei Awards Three Rising Photography Stars £10,000 To Make A Difference In Their Communities
Passionate photographer, performance artist Anthony Shintai Amao has today been unveiled as one of the three national winners of Huawei and Dazed’s Reveal the Real Youcommunity-led photography competition. Anthony’s winning photos will now be displayed in a “Living Gallery” from Wednesday 17 Sunday 21st January 2018 in the Rotunda Square at Birmingham’s Bullring Shopping Centre.
The Reveal The Real You initiative forms part of Huawei’s Project Possible campaign and was set up to champion the inspirational stories of people who are empowered by Huawei technology. The campaign set to challenge and change perceptions through imagery.
A committed break-dancer, Anthony was among twenty shortlisted up and coming photographers from around the country selected to document and celebrate communities and causes they feel passionately about through a series of ten powerful images shot on the Huawei P10 smartphone, which comes equipped with a Leica dual-lens camera.
Beating thousands of talented young photographers to win the inaugural competition, Anthony’s winning imagery highlighted Birmingham’s underground breakdancing scene and the work of Break Mission, which sets up sets up local street dancing events to raise awareness of homelessness in the region. Each event is free to attend as long as attendees bring food or recycled clothes which is then donated to a local homeless shelter or charity. The striking series of black and white portraits featuring dancers from Break Mission show breakdancing as a powerful form of self-expression and art. Anthony’s win has also earned Break Mission a £10,000 bursary.
The Living Gallery is free to the public and will be an opportunity for locals to celebrate an up and coming photographic talent as well as develop a deeper understanding of the break-dancing community in Birmingham.
Commenting on the competition, Anthony said: “Dance and photography is one of the best creative combinations and getting the opportunity to capture a community and artform that I feel passionately about through the Huawei and Dazed Reveal The Real You photo initiative has been a truly meaningful experience.
“Using the Huawei P10, my photo portraits aim to wake people up to the vibrant Breakin’ community – and wider Hip Hop culture – that lives in the heart of Birmingham. I’m thrilled to be able to showcase my work on a greater platform and raise awareness and support for the great work Break Mission do.”
The winning images were selected by a panel of expert independent judges, with emerging photographers Kat Collins and Sahvannah Amaka also being selected as finalists and awarded £10,000 each to donate to a community cause or initiative of their choice – Shoreditch Youth Dance and The Camberwell After School Project. All three winners’ images will also be on display at an exhibition in London next month.

A committed breakdancer himself, Anthony has captured portraits of the Break Mission Crew to provide an inside look into the world of Birmingham’s underground Breakin’ scene.
Cause: The £10,000 bursary will be awarded to Break Mission, a community hip-hop events education initiative that brings people together to experience a cultural understanding of what the hip-hop community is about and raises awareness of homelessness in the local area

Sahvannah Amaka
With music in her blood, Sahvannah’s images show how the spirit of jazz continues to thrive in London, revealing the truths of her peers as they make their way in today’s cultural landscape.
Cause: The £10,000 bursary will be awarded to Camberwell’s After School Project which provides childcare for lone, single, studying and working parents in Southwark from 2 to 11 years.

Kat Collings
Shining a light on her local dance group, Shoreditch Youth Dance (SYD), Ka’s images celebrate artists as people by capturing them in the places they live, rather than the familiarity of the stage.
Cause: The £10,000 bursary will be awarded to SYD to help them continue to mentor and support young creative leaders.
