I get a bit too excited when beetroot season is in full swing. I celebrate with variations on concoctions of dishes (disclosure – I love to cook). After I’ve got past the Lady MacBeth hand scrubbing moment, I slice it really thinly, brush with oil and roast in a hot oven but as we are having a huge heat alert, this weekend I really don’t want to use the oven. The tranquility of rivers is never so close than in deep summer, rivers awaken our senses, renewing connections with nature. I’ve never lived far from a river almost like a magnet I’ve always been pulled towards one. They all have a destination and they travel relentlessly, unlike a lake. I have many favourites but perhaps if I had to select one, it would be the Ouse, in Sussex, not far from where my eldest son went to boarding school. This week my favourite book publisher, MACK books sent me their title SCUMB Manifesto by Justine Kurland, to review and I love it! Inspired by Valerie Solanas’ iconoclastic feminist tract SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men), SCUMB Manifesto introduces us to photographer Justine Kurland’s own uncompromising initiative: the Society for Cutting Up Men’s Books. And she does just that, books by 150 white straight men are cut up and reconfigured into her own intricate interpretation.
