I get a bit too excited when beetroot season is in full swing. I celebrate with variations on concoctions of dishes (disclosure – I love to cook). The tranquility of rivers is never so close than in deep summer, rivers awaken our senses, renewing connections with nature. I’ve never lived far from a river almost like a magnet I’ve always been pulled towards one. They all have a destination and they travel relentlessly, unlike a lake. I have many favourites but perhaps if I had to select one, it would be the Ouse, in Sussex, not far from where my eldest son went to boarding school. This week my favourite book publisher, MACK books sent me their title SCUMB Manifesto by Justine Kurland, to review and I love it! Inspired by Valerie Solanas’ iconoclastic feminist tract SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men), SCUMB Manifesto introduces us to photographer Justine Kurland’s own uncompromising initiative: the Society for Cutting Up Men’s Books.
