‘The Encounter’ by Jessy Menchaca
I love the sense of humor and timing in this photo, as Jessy has hit just the right moment of tension for the viewer. Did you see this coming for a bit Jessy, or did you instantly just see this moment as it was unfolding? The power of this photo lies in the question – what happened next? Good timing Jessy! (Do tell us!)
‘Dim Sum’ by Ile Monte
This is a lovely and atmospheric image that captures nicely the suffocating conditions of these workers. The blurring of the periphery of the photo keeps this scene at a psychological remove for the viewer, although our attention on the female in the center of the image elicits a feeling of compassion for her at her work. Nice job Ile.
‘Love Travels by Train’ by Carlein Van Der Beek
I was struck by the dreamy and almost nostalgic quality of this photo. The blurring effect is perfectly suited for the story of the woman and heart in the background. Is she going to see her lover? What is the narrative here? The viewer is left wanting to know more. Nice job Carlein.
‘Humbert Street’ by Julia Nathason
Love the color, composition, and sense of rhythm and pattern in this photograph. The power of the image comes from these formal elements, which are perfectly framed. The forward movement of the woman striding out of the right of the composition wonderfully balances the five trash bins on the left. Nice job Julia.
