Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr/Instagram Group Showcase – 11 April 2021

When my beautiful daughter leaves home for university later this year to read law, there is a book I’ll slip in the bottom of her case, indeed it is a book that I have bought for friends in the past, to help them work through some feelings at difficult times. It is a book by Charlie Mackesy, he was a cartoonist for the Spectator as well as a book illustrator for Oxford University Press but more importantly than that, he is the most kind and generous artist who only wants to give. It consists of conversations between the characters, who match the title of the book – The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. All four characters actually represent different parts of the same person. The inquisitive boy, the mole who’s enthusiastic but a bit greedy, the fox who’s been hurt so is withdrawn from life, slow to trust but wants to be part of things, and the horse who’s the wisest bit, the deepest part of you, the soul“, explained Mackesy. This is not a new book and it is widely popular now. Before it was though, Mackesy once put one page of the book on Instagram and then promptly forgot all about it. The page featured an illustration of the horse, the boy and the fox, the text said “What is the bravest thing you’ve ever said?” asked the boy. “Help“, said the horse. Before he knew it Mackesy was receiving messages from hospitals and institutions expressing they had been using it.  Additionally, the army had also been using it for their soldiers experiencing PTSD. Mackesy made this drawing at a time in his life when he had lost a friend “when things make you think harder about what really matters“, he said. It’s a book to treasure no matter what your age, when we just need to be reminded that love and friendship is the most important thing in our lives.
