“I am in my favorite spot, in the house, my corner of the sofa. It fits my body, much like the iPhone fits my hands. We are old friends. And, it’s where I feel safe, creative, and comfortable. After being asked, by Joanne, to share my five most favorite iPhone apps, I pause for a couple of weeks. I know my routine. It wasn’t because the decision is challenging. It is, however, because explaining my process is not a direct route. Art is like this for me, a meandering path to a worthwhile destination.
Inside my iPhone there are myriad apps, with which to create storytelling imagery. When I say this, it is nothing short of a true story. I’ll also admit. I have twelve pages of irresistible apps through which to peruse, as my finger navigates side-to-side searching for the perfect one. My iPhone is a veritable artist’s palette of electronically powered, kaleidoscope infused creative options.
In this moment, it is safe to say that my favorite top five apps are: Distressed FX, Snapseed, Repix, Mextures, and Image Blender. It is not to say that I this will not change. But, these are the five that I consistently utilize when processing mobile images. Let’s explore each one. I’ll share the ways in which these apps bring my mobile art to life”.
Distressed FX
Distressed FX is my favorite go to app for a many reasons. Lets begin with the dreamy, sky textures. The cotton candy colours are alluring. When on an adventure, who can resist a sweet, soft sky under which to travel? This easily raises my imagination to the need for birds. The birds bring movement and add a storytelling element that is forever and always a spiritual part of my work. This is one of my first steps. I prefer the birds under any additional textures and layers. At least, I find that works best for me.
Snapseed
Snapseed brings so many creative options to processing mobile images. It is action packed with every need from adjusting brightness and warmth to cropping and rotating. However, expanding the frame is my favorite feature within Snapseed. When do I use it during the editing process? Early in, I find it works best in the beginning stages of the editing process for me.
Repix
Repix is an app that I adore. Maybe it is the tenderness of the stars as they sprinkle the frame. Perhaps it is the moodiness of random, shapely raindrops as they drench an image. It could be the simplicity of undoing and erasing those once thought important ingredients. I am unsure. For whatever the explanation, I am drawn to this app like a wayfarer is to a journey. This one is a need, not a want, smiling.
Mextures
Mextures is my go to app for the addition of shading and color tones. The blending options are endless. When do I add this element? Toward the end is when it feels right, for me, to bring the image into Mextures. The grit and grain textures, along with the bountiful selections of formulas are the stops I most often make with this app. As well, the time spent in the guest formula section is worth the visit. It’s all good stuff.
Image Blender
Image Blender brings the ability to layer multiple textures and images. The blending modes range from one extreme to the other. The mask feature is a wonderful way to protect the focal point while removing pieces here and there revealing just what your imagination has in mind. All the while the layers are easily resized, rotated, and artfully positioned atop one another via the arrange option. The possibilities are endless.
“Many thanks, again, Joanne. I appreciate the opportunity to share my love of mobile photography with others. This is a wonderful forum on which to learn, share, find and give inspiration”.
