2020-04-25 / Comments Off on Mobile Photography & Art – Saturday Poetry ‘Social Distancing’ with Juan Felipe Herrera and @thefringeproject

This weeks Saturday Poetry, matched with mobile photography/art is entitled ‘Social Distancing’ by Juan Felipe Herrera. He was born in Fowler, California, on December 27, 1948. The son of migrant farmers, Herrera moved often, living in trailers or tents along the roads of the San Joaquin Valley in Southern California. As a child, he attended school in a variety of small towns from San Francisco to San Diego. He began drawing cartoons while in middle school, and by high school was playing folk music by Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie. Herrera graduated from San Diego High in 1967, and was one of the first wave of Chicanos to receive an Educational…

2020-04-04 / Comments Off on Mobile Photography & Art – Saturday Poetry ‘Kindness’ by Naomi Shihab Nye with Jeroen Hendriks

This weeks Saturday Poetry, matched with mobile photography/art is entitled ‘Kindness’ by Naomi Shihab Nye and I felt this was the perfect poem today, post birthday. I received a huge amount of birthday wishes, artwork and personal messages from all around the world yesterday and I have still not read them all, I savour them. My overwhelming feeling was of the kindness of everyone who took the time and trouble to communicate with me, about something so relatively trivial as my birthday, in relation to the devastation of the world in which we are currently living. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I think you’ll all…

It is a glorious spring day outside, there was a beautiful dawn chorus emitting from the garden birds this morning, the flowering bushes are starting to blossom. There’s a cold east wind but the piercing sun heats up our glass roofed conservatory, where I am writing this column with so much warmth, I envisage I am basking on a warm coastline, cocktail in hand. Of course, the realisation that Coronovirus was going to be a very serious problem came to me several weeks ago. My husband was interviewing a photographer in Northern Italy, before the lockdown, but after the schools had closed. He spoke about all the teenagers hanging around,…

Mobile Photography and Art Interview – Hope In Adversity Interview with Vicki Cooper

2020-03-21 / Comments Off on Mobile Photography and Art Interview – Hope In Adversity Interview with Vicki Cooper

I am currently self-isolating for twelve weeks as my Dr has said I am in the high risk category. In my home, we have all had to make adaptions to adjust to this pandemic, although, at least, currently, we are all well. I’ve been recalling many of the good words our dear friend and talented artist Carolyn Hall Young shared with us, not least ‘in any given situation we can always choose, hope over fear‘ – let’s all choose hope.  I am aware there are many others also in a similar situation at the moment and I felt it would be a good idea to create an interview, reflecting these times with…

      Apple’s COVID-19 response

      2020-03-14 / Comments Off on Apple’s COVID-19 response

Via Tim Cook To the worldwide Apple family, The global spread of COVID-19 is affecting every one of us. At Apple, we are people first, and we do what we do with the belief that technology can change lives and the hope that it can be a valuable tool in a moment like this. Teachers are innovating to make remote lessons come alive. Companies are experimenting with new ways to stay productive. And medical experts can diagnose illnesses and reach millions with critical updates in the blink of an eye. We are all adapting and responding in our own way, and Apple wants to continue to play a role in…

Clive James the prolific Austrialian author, poet and broadcaster died late last year. I’ve always been a fan of his work, he made his name as a television critic, essayist and wit but he started as a poet and just over five years ago he was diagnosed with leukaemia, emphysema and kidney failure – he described it as ‘the lot’ and he ended as a poet. There’s a particular story I remember reading about James, it goes like this… One time he was going through a creative dry spell. He had written a play for the London stage and it bombed spectacularly. Not only did it ruin his family financially…

Sally Brampton (founding editor of Elle magazine, UK – who killed herself after health professionals ‘missed opportunities to offer her help’, in 2016) said in her memoir on depression: “We are simply defeated by the long, hard struggle to stay alive. When somebody dies after a long illness, people are apt to say, with a note of approval: ‘He fought so hard.’ And they are inclined to think, about a suicide, that no fight was involved, that somebody simply gave up. This is quite wrong.” And so, this week, my thoughts have been with the local family of a 15 year old boy from my daughters school who killed himself.…
