Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr/Instagram Group Showcase – 5 April 2020
Influenced by Susan Sontag, Maggie Nelson and Elaine Scarry, ‘The Art of the Body’ by Alexander Allison has perhaps been my fastest read yet. Not that there’s any race with reading, but sometimes, it’s so impossible for me to put a book down, that even when making dinner, I’ll prop a book open and this is what happened to me during this further week of lock down 2020. ‘The Art of the Body’ is a book about a woman, Janet, who cares a lot. She cares about what people think of her, she cares about the opportunities she’s wasted, she cares about the hurt she’s caused. But Janet is also…

This week, I’d like to talk with you about courage and it’s scary, being creative is a path for the brave. If you lose courage, you lose creativity. Each one of you has hidden treasures within you, as do I and we need to bring them to light and it takes a lot of faith and hard work, not least devotion. It’s important to say ‘no’ at times, I suppose, not that I’m one for that, it’s easy to say ‘no’, you’re off the hook but if you say ‘yes’ then what happens? It’s showtime! There are times, when you might need to lay low, as I have this week,…

“Whenever the world throws rose petals at you, which thrill and seduce the ego, beware” Anne Lamott. I was told a similar thing, not quite so poetically, when I was promoted and became the technical editor of a print camera magazine, many years ago… it’s long gone. “Many congratulations Joanne, but keep those feet on the ground“, cautioned the main editor of the title. Sound advice, but doesn’t it get a little boring sometimes? For years now, I’ve noticed that I have become more and more sensible and it’s getting frustrating. I’m organised, at least in my mind, it might not show physically in my office. I keep my children’s…

Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 28 October 2018
Life is an enactment, art the outward manifestation of the scenes performed on an inner stage and no greater is this portrayal witnessed than in this weeks Mobile Photography and Art Showcase. Consciously desexed, I am somewhat a phenomenolgist as I curate each week. Infilitrating the discrepancies between reasoning and imagination, demanding the subjectivity of the objectiveness of each work of art, I invite all viewers to experience the anteriority of mobile art; the power, the strength and the hauntingly honesty of this new movement of art. As Emily Dickinson, whom I have been reading this week, knew, the truth that underlies all art is an apocalyptic yearning for ecstasy,…

Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 21 October 2018
One late night this week, on the tube homeward bound, I was accosted by a couple. One sat purposefully too close to me, physical and personal boundaries abandoned, and the other, opposite, knocking knees. The woman, her head leaning on my shoulder, was stonned I would say and the man somewhat addled, suffering a huge headache, I was stone cold sober. Once they penetrated my wired vigilance I got chatting. Apparently, they had mistaken me for Rosemary Bennett, The Times, Social Affairs Correspondent but they couldn’t quite marry up my constrained chronological age and hers. Admiring my skin, my clothes, my rings, my voice, I felt owned and whilst living…

“A husband hits his wife to silence her. A date rapist or acquaintance rapist refuses to let the “no” of his victim mean what it should, that she alone has jurisdiction over her body. Rape culture asserts that women’s testimony is worthless, untrustworthy. Anti-abortion activists also seek to silence the self-determination of women. A murderer silences forever. These are assertions that the victim has no rights, no value – is not an equal“, an extract from Rebecca Solnit’s book ‘The Mother of All Questions’ and it’s highly appropriate today. No, I will not be silenced. No, I will not allow my FB page to go black. Right now, we are…

Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase 19 February 2017
Wow! What a week for mobile photography and art imagery! You’ve all kept me very busy this morning/afternoon, selecting your images and placing them, carefully into this showcase. So much so, that my mind has almost gone blank with what to say. Usually, on a Sunday, after I have worked on our showcase, I assimilate some words and thoughts, things I have been thinking over during the week, perhaps. Of course, this week took in Valentines Day, which to many of us means love. So, of course, that got me thinking, of the Valentines week that I spent with my love and also, I thought of, perhaps in view of…

Human happiness as many writers will tell you is a mix of the rough and the smooth, the aches and the pains as well as the joys of life. Happiness is neither the journey nor the destination, it is simply something we achieve more often than not when when we travel the right way. The images that you will be drawn to and the music that flows through this weeks mobile photography and art Flickr Group showcase have a sense of quiet wisdom all of their own. It represents a marvellous synthesis of good sense and talent. Enjoy! If you would like your work to be considered for entry into…
