Not all self-portraiture includes the photographer, sometimes it is possible to use other people to stand in. I mentioned Sophie Calle‘s work last week and her series ‘Take Care of Yourself 2007-2009), is an example of this. Some photographers use people in a metaphoric sense, I’m thinking of Maria Kapajevea, in ‘A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Woman, 2012-ongoing’) or some choose not to include anyone in the picture at all (Nigel Shafran, Washing-up 2000). It is a glorious spring day outside, there was a beautiful dawn chorus emitting from the garden birds this morning, the flowering bushes are starting to blossom. Fatigue with the stress of life, current news, financial worries, sickness, broken relationships, abuse, wreak havoc. As I shot my (medicinal) drug needle miraculously through my fingernail instead of my thigh this week, I know and it hurts but there’s also something called ‘compassion fatigue’ in relation to photography. It is so called when people view vast quantites of shocking images, perhaps photojournalism from a warzone for example and they become muted, to the visual atrocities before their eyes. From as early as the 1980’s ‘compassion fatigue’ was also known as ‘Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder’, essentially it developed from an excess of compassion. I live in a built up area, as you might imagine, but when I stopped off at a petrol station, in the dark and pouring rain, to fill my car up this week, I was silenced into hushed awe. What does surprise me is when writers bandy around the phrase ‘creative industries‘. I can honestly say, hand on heart, I don’t know of any ‘uncreative industries‘. Creativity is the most powerful competitive advantage any business can possess. New ideas, fresh thinking are the fizz companies to make their business’s pop. There’s this overriding notion that creative artists are cut from a different cloth, this needs to be debunked. Young children overspill with ideas, they cannot hold back. MIRA Mobile Prize 2019 – 7th Edition – Competition Results
I am delighted to congratulate all the participants and winners in this years MIRA Mobile Prize. I was fortunate once again to be a member of this jury along with, Andrea Bigiarini, Dan Berman, Gina Costa, Giulia Baita and Luis Octavio Costa and I have been so impressed with all the entries, each year the standard gets higher and higher. From five thousand images, to one overall winning image, one overall landscape winner and the best rated Portuguese winner. This weeks Saturday Poetry, matched with mobile photography/art is entitled ‘Weep Holes’ by Andrea Cohen. Cohen received an MFA from the University of Iowa. She is the author of the poetry collections Unfathoming (Four Way Books, 2017); Furs Not Mine (Four Way Books, 2015), winner of the 2016 Golden Crown Award for Poetry; Kentucky Derby (Salmon Poetry, 2011); Long Division (Salmon Poetry, 2009); and The Cartographer’s Vacation (Owl Creek Press, 1999).
