Streets Ahead – Thirty Fifth Edition – Mobile Street Photography
Welcome to the thirty fifth edition of “Streets Ahead,” a weekly column dedicated to women mobile street photographers. Each week we review and curate work that was submitted to our Flickr Group. In addition to creating a showcase video which features a sampling of submitted work, we also highlight a few images that caught our attention… offering some thoughtful commentary about technique, composition, and subject matter. If you are not a member of our Facebook group… we highly recommend that you join us! This is our space for sharing newsworthy information and conducting discussions (what, when, where, why and how) about Women Photographers/Artists and Street Photography, in general.
So, if you are a woman street photographer, please join our growing community… I’m sure that you will agree that we are a very enthusiastic and supportive group of women!!
Gina has done a superb job commenting on this weeks hand-picked images, it’s a real pleasure to read her thoughts and Cara has also once again put together an outstanding video showcase, that will leave you quite breathless – thank you both so much.

‘Looking back on the days, just wanna be free through the love in your eyes…’ by Jeanette Vasquez (@JV@NYC)
This dreamy, evocative image brings to mind our memories of, as the title suggests, just wanting to be free and loved. The slight blurring effect and placement of subject in the immediate foreground further highlights the slightly romantic, nostalgic quality of the image. The slightly elevated point of view Jeanette has chosen also adds a nice dimension to this lovely image.
‘Staircase to Heaven!!’ by Grace Brignolle (@icstreets)
The tone and composition of this moving photo perfectly captures the monumental theme of the work. Note the words inscribed in these imposing steps as parent and daughter ascend this monument dedicated to the aspirations of future generations. The drama of the clouds, radiating from a central focal point further emphasizes the moving message communicated. This is a brilliant capture Grace, a very moving photo.
‘Dutch Brothers’ Moment’ by Meri Walker (@TheiPhoneArtGirl)
So much is going in in this image, I had to look for some time to figure out if the action was in a domestic kitchen, or small town drive-thru! The complexity of the action and density of the visual elements really convey the chaos of the moment as these gals are working hard to fill the waiting orders! I love the dense action in this capture Meri!
‘Enduring Love’ by Jess1fer
The timeless and enduring nature of the love of this elderly couple, as they sway to the music (hopefully in their souls as well as in the room) is beautifully communicated by the blurring of the figures and muting of the soft tones. A nostalgic and beautifully composed image.
‘Shadow of Wings’ by Stephanie Le Pape (@sanikdotes)
Stephanie captures the repeating form of the angel wing of the background graffiti wonderfully, with the flow of the subject’s dress, and the shadow of the dress on the painted wall behind. This repetition of forms perfectly suits the forward action of the image – propelling the movement even further left, beyond the borders of the photograph.
‘need to nibble’ by Michelle Robinson (@michmutters)
I love the vintage look and feel of this capture, as if it is a still from a 1950’s film. The close cropping and point of view made this an intimate and very evocative image. I just want to know what else is going on here. Lovely capture, interesting story Michelle!

Such fun for me to see this image included in the Showcase, ladies! Thank you. I used to street shoot so much…It’s harder to do up here where I live now because there are fewer “streets” to shoot. Literally. So glad everyone’s enjoyed Dutch Brothers’ Moment. It’s a wild and crazy little oasis …

I’m sorry I am so behind the times here, but I was away for 10 days caregiving to my terminally ill mother, and since I got back, I’ve been running in place trying to catch up! Thank you so much for selecting my work, Gina Costa and Cara Gallardo Weil! I’m flattered to be in such great company with these works and photographers.
