Leica and Huawei – Smartphone Photography Partnership
Leica and Chinese Telecom giant Huawei have formed a smartphone photography partnership. That very sentence is quite extraordinary, on the surface Leica and Huawei make strange bedfellows but dig beneath the luscious silk sheets and you will find some stimulating smart moves. Both Leica and Huawei have a lot to gain by this partnership, Leica want a slice of the smartphone photography pie. Huawei is the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world and in 2015 sold more than 100 million devices. Transport for London and Apps for Good announce partnership helping young Londoners develop technology skills
My good friend Jenny Hodge, previously PR Manager for Leica in the UK is representing Switch Communications on behalf of Apps for Good and it’s a fabulous resource. Apps for Good is an open-source technology education programme aimed at providing young people with creative, business and technical skills, particularly in low income and under-represented communities. Participants in the new scheme will work together in teams over several months to design exciting new apps for mobile phones and social media platforms such as Facebook, which could work to find ways of tackling issues in their communities utilising TfL’s publicly available open data. Jony Ive To Design New Leica M Camera
Well, we are not surprised by this news but definitely excited. We’ve known for many years how Apple feels about Leica cameras and so it was no surprise to learn at Leica’s special event last night at Photokina (where theappwhisperer is right now) that Dr Andreas Kaufmann from Leica announced they’ve got a very special limited edition version of the Leica M planned, one that will be designed by Jony Ive – Senior Vice President, Industrial Design at Apple. The downside is that when they say ‘limited’ they really do mean limited. In fact only one camera will be produced and will likely be auctioned off for charity. However, this…

Nikon Coolpix S800 To Have Android Inside
According to Nikonrumors this morning, Nikon will soon announce a new Android based compact camera. The model name will be the Coolpix S800. Nikon is expected to make this announcement at Photokina later on this year. We knew it was only a matter of time until this happened, afterall the compact camera market has suffered hugely with the popularity of the Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S II and III to name just a few. It’s interesting, where does this leave us? Our phones have become our cameras and our cameras are becoming our phones. I think the vast majority of digital cameras will have Android inside before long. It’s…

Would Henri Cartier-Bresson Have Used A Smartphone?
Theresa Malone from The Guardian has written an interesting piece in the paper today. She poses the question of ‘would Henri Cartier-Bresson have used a camera phone?’. It is of course a very topical subject, not speifically regarding Henri Cartier-Bresson but for all professional photographers. Many grumble that smartphone photography is not ‘real’ photography although many also embrace it for what it is, convenience. No smartphone is a Leica, don’t get me wrong but I can’t help but agree with the conclusion of this piece, that possibly in all certainty, he may well of picked out a Smartphone to use and captured some brillant images I’m sure. You can read…
